It still amazes me how people around the world still support Gurbir Singh Taran Taarani.

Gurbir Singh has been caught a number of times having illicit affairs with women at the same time. All he wants to do is get in the best place that he can and become a "star". The attached screenshot from a recent Facebook post shows that after his AKJ ban in the UK, he is desperate to do keertan anywhere in the world and asks for "Paper" meaning visas.

This screenshot was captured back in July and we thought we would not publish this post and give this individual a chance to sort himself out. But he didn't.

Yes, he does great keertan but that does not mean you can overlook the obvious. Everyone in UK is aware of his nature. Oh and he is the brother of Tejbir Singh, who recently got divorced after he was caught screwing around with other girls. It was obvious that all Tejbir really wanted as well was to get his citizenship in the UK.

Put together these two brothers equal trouble. Sure, we could have done with more proof on this website about the two, but these two prey on innocent girls and we don't want to subject them to any shame. Of course, these two brothers know that and that's why they do what they do. There will be those that don't care what this blog post say, and there will be those that do - and we want those that do to stop supporting Gurbir Singh and take a stand. Get Gurbir Singh off stages.

So you would think that Surj The Perv MIGHT actually admit his mistake and sort out his "problems"... there seems to be no chance of that happening anytime soon. At least Tejbir Singh Bir actually took the advice of the Singh's and do something proactive to sort out his mistakes. Surj The Perv is just trying to cover it up by telling people his account got "duplicated" and that someone has trapped him by using a duplicated profile. See the screenshot of his account below sent in to us by one of his many Facebook "friends / potential targets".

This is Surjit Singh (Surj Singh), he is from Derby in the West Midlands, attends a lot of kids camps, does sewa, he's in his mid-twenties and he likes to flirt with underage girls... oh wait, but it's ok, he says he would wait until they are 16 until he actually has sex with them(!) He also thinks its ok to ask a girl 10 years his junior about bra sizes and getting into bed with him.

Tejbir Singh Bir

We received an alert about Tejbir Singh Bir who is from Manchester early in 2010 and, despite ignoring initial complaints about this person, we eventually were sent hard evidence to prove this and we just had to put it up to warn people about him. He is seen grooming young girls on facebook and then MSN and even sent pictures of his chest and genitals to a young girl hoping she would meet him for sex.

He is an organizer, as he states in his conversations, of the Manchester samagams that happen every year and we found out that he was in charge of accommodation for boys AND girls during the 2010 program. We also discovered he was very flirty towards these girls managing to obtain phone numbers, adding them on facebook and MSN and trying to speak to them unnecessarily.

Shinda Singh Explains Sikh Student Camp

As many of you may or may not have heard, there was some rawkus in the UK over the weekend that saw a group of individuals hospitalize members from another. Undoubtedly many are shocked at such brazen - “Sikh on Sikh” violence, but from the sounds of it, wasn’t this all a long time coming?

Firstly I’m not condoning the violence, although I’m not against the use of violence to accomplish a means, I do hold that violence should remain a last resort, and a certain level of thought / care needs to be taken before one chooses to cross that line, because rarely is it possible to undo such damage. In other words, once you cross that line, there’s no crossing back, so it better be worth it.

Now to the real flesh of the topic, as to why was this all a long time coming. I need to make it clear now that I’m not involved in any way with the Sikh Student camp in the UK, never been there, don’t personally know anyone who has, so everything I do know about it, for or against comes from third party sources.

Having talked to various people, my understanding of the Sikh Student camp emerged out of the old BOSS Student Camps when the UK Nihang faction (Niddar Singh and crew), were removed from taking part in any shape or form. This led to the creation of the Sikh Student camps which offered what it and those who support the camps claimed to be, a diverse outlook on Sikhi. Now I don’t know how much of an influence Niddar Singh or his minions have on the actual camp but if it’s anything like the views expressed on their website, then we all know how diverse they can be. Also, Niddar Singh and company are no strangers to violence, with news of fights that occur between members of his own group or that of opposing factions emerging yearly whether it be in the UK or stretching as far as India. However, to this degree it has been refuted that Niddar Singh and company have nothing to do with the camps, so I guess we’ll just have to take their (those saying such things) word for it, [to the contrary] that these two “beefs” are not connected.

Many individuals in recent times have expressed a disgust with the camps, over videos and images that have emerged on the net depicting individuals in a negative light. Whether it was of organizers’ [can’t say if they are or not] doing there best to imitate Pac, or dropping verses like Chamkila, it’s fair to say that not everyone was happy, and felt that these few reasons alone were a just means to call for a boycott.

I would have to give this one to the defendants [Sikh Students], simply because you can’t hold the organizers responsible for the actions of a few. The singing and dancing video apparently was done for jokes, and it seems that people are blowing it out of proportion to justify their own means, as for the pictures, not exactly capturing individuals at there finest moments, but again I’ll give some of these images the benefit of the doubt that they were being done for jokes, whether or not you share in their sense of humor I’ll leave to you.

What raises an alarm with me however are the allegations of harassment and lude behavior towards the Bibian at the camp. These are always serious allegations that require serious attention, but just posting ones claims on message boards does seem rather redundant, as it rarely serves a purpose in solving the problem.

Now apart from the rest the Sikh Student camp has faced many of these allegations and offered assurances that mistakes of the past will be corrected, yet it seems that they have gone against their word, based on various articles. If this is the case then one needs to wonder where their [those behind the camp’s] motives lie.

Especially with all the press against the camp one can’t be so naive to the fact that there isn’t more then what meets the eye. After all for the major jathebandi’s to ask for a boycott of the camp, something serious must be wrong.

Taking all the above into consideration, its hard not to imagine why individuals would want to see the camp closed, but apart from that there’s also the Gurmat aspect of it.

Now I’m not against a camp which promotes a Jatha’s own view or slant on Gurmat, after all every camps views on Gurmat will be slanted in some manor one way or another. At the same time though, I’ve never heard of a single Jatha which condones alcohol, cutting of hair, and discouraging people from keeping rehit. Whether they stress the importance of keeping rehit at there camps or not, [has been said that Rehit isn’t over emphasized to prevent from scaring away the new comers], discouraging people from rehit is absurd, which has been the case reported by those against the camp.

Looking at the above its easy to find why those against the Sikh Student camp would feel frustrated by the actions [or lack thereof] on the part of organizers to fix these problems. Would this constitute their right to bomb someone’s car or jumping them in there driveway, probably not, but it does help serve a better picture of what’s really going on.

Lastly, are the victims really the victims? No doubt they are the ones who are suffering from the attacks, but how innocent are they to the whole ordeal? After all, imagine if they simply challenged those against the camp by saying something like, “we’re doing this camp one way or another, we dare you try and stop us” or something to that effect, can you really hold it against someone for calling their bluff?

Again, I’m not here trying to condone the violence, because like I said earlier violence has a time and place, which I really don’t feel it did in this situation, but to also paint things black and white, having a good guy and bad guy just doesn’t seem fair, since clearly there is a lot of grey area in between.

Finally, in-fighting amongst sikh groups is nothing new, nor the violence between them. There has been in-fighting since the times of the Guru’s, and the ways of the elder generations is no deep dark secret. End of the day, we do need to stand up against those who go against the very rudimentary principles of Sikhi, however we do need to leave some flexibility and room for rationality and the ability to agree to disagree. With all the problems facing us, we need to pick and choose our fights, and the amount of energy we exert into each carefully, otherwise we will quickly find ourselves drained with nothing left. Conflicts at the grassroots levels such as Sikhi camps are especially dis-heartening as it sets all parties back when trying to convince parents and youth that they are genuinely interested in helping the kids. One needs look no further then the Bugga camps that used to happen in Ontario in the early 90’s. Ever since the corruption and exposure of those camps parents have had to take that extra vigilance before sending there kids to any camp [which they should be doing anyway’s], but when it comes to those who just don’t have the time, saying no and keeping the kids at home becomes just that much easier.

The culprits responsible for these and other incidents have been identified face to face and it is important to realise that you where dismissing these issues by saying those individuals have been banned for some time and so been dealt with. When the pictures of 2005 camp are reviewed those individuals are in the front during seminars and workshops. These same individuals were promoting the camp at "Keertan in the Park" in Hounslow, one week ago.

We have done nothing more but to given you suggestions and offer our help to stop these things from happen this year. Please remember our resolve to allow 10 or so of us to help out at your camp, this was flatly refused by Camp Organiser Gurmukh Singh of Gravesend.

Please acknowledge that within this meeting you agreed that these issues happened. Refering to the camp organiser who is head of security, she stated that if the Camp Organisers cannot impliment controls then the camp should not happen. When we questioned about how these culprits were dealt with, Camp organisers like Gurmukh Singh refused to elborate, again this doesnt give us any confidence in your intentions.

Within some of the emails I have received people are asking to clarify the camp organisers. If you remember you agreed to submit to us a list of camp organisers so that we could differenciate the organisers from the culprits. As to this day we have not received this list. It looks as if you do not wish to differenciate the organisers from the culprits.

The details have been with the organisers for many weeks now and we are still awaiting any response or action.

Swami Ramdev is known for his Yoga exercises, he heads Divya Yog Mandir Trust which also uses Ayurveda to their patients, under the guidance of Acharya Bal Krishan.

Swami Ramdev earned popularity in India and the West by claiming to cure diseases through ‘pranayam’ but was criticised for the alleged use of powder made of human skulls and animal parts in his ayurvedic medicines.

Over 100 ex-volunteers from Divya Yoga Pharmacy went on strike alleging Swami Ramdev was putting powder of human skulls and animal organs in "medicines" and giving them to the less fortunate who are desperate for medical help.

Swami Ramdev is alleged to be a major supporter of the RSS, which Panthic groups describe as Anti-Sikh. They state their aim is to distort Sikh principles, history and rehat with the aim of bringing Sikhi under the umbrella of Hinduism. He is often seen with influential members of the RSS and makes speeches in support. He attends RSS rallies as a dignitary and is shown above with K.S. Sudarshan, the leader of the RSS, at a recent RSS convention. The BJP, the political wing of the RSS describe Swami Ramdev on their website as the "living symbol of Hindutva" (which Panthic groups describe as an Anti-Sikh socio-political-religious philosophy). The BJP state "Swamiji has dedicated his life to promoting good health and spreading the essence of Hindutva"

On his trip to the UK, he visited cultural centers, and religious places and was invited by Gurudwaras. Gurudwaras are by nature welcomming and open to all and ignore Caste, Colour, Creed or any other denomination. However, many UK Gurughar invited him and bestowed VIP status to him over and above that of sangat thus causing disrespect to this principle Sikh tenet.

On Wednesday 26th July Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha welcomed Swami Ramdev at their Birmingham Gurdwara and Nishkam Educational and Cultural Centre (NECC). GNNSJ were advised by members of local sangat that it would not be a good idea inviting a major supporter of the RSS to address congregation at the centre as it is the duty of each and every Sikh to endeavour to spread Gurmat. However, SSNews has often written highly positively about the excellent sewa of GNNSJ in both the UK and abroad and hope such endeavours will continue as a primary focus.

Gurdwara Karamsar (Ilford, UK) also received Swami Ramdev giving him a VIP reception. Outside the Diwan Hall sangat pictured people bowing their heads to the local Baba Partap Singh who received Swami Ramdev. Ramdev was then ushered into the Darbar of Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Maharaj and seated on the stage. The committee actively encouraged the disrespect to Guru Maharaj of having the RSS supporter speak over the Gurbani of the Akhand Path that was being conducted. Sri Guru Granth Sahib was being recited without the microphone on and the voice of the "living symbol of Hindutva" was being played on the loudspeakers to the congregation.

The Gurughar invited the major RSS supporter at a time when the Hukamnama of the Akal Takht to boycott the RSS community was in effect. Sangat allege at certain Gurughar clearly the status of parbandhak committees, Babae and even RSS-supporters is taking precedence over Guru Maharaj and Gurmat. In truth, Sikh Principles, Rehat and Respect for Guru Maharaj should be ensured at all costs.

This Swami is follower of Arya Samaj and often has Dayanands picture in his TV programmes. Why is he being invited to a Gurdwara when his organisation makes anti Sikh statements.

Because of Arya Samaj Punjabi Hindus put Hindi as their main Language and caused the trouble in the Punjab. It was the Arya Samaj paper in the 70's and 80's that insulted the Sikhs and caused trouble.

'Dayanand, a Baniya Swami from Gujrat launched a movement called ARYA SAMAJ, which shunned Idol Worship but mocked Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind singh.

Dayanand made a grave mistake when he criticized Guru Nanak by calling him "a Fool". Arya Samaj was only successful in Punjab where many Punjabi Hindus converted to Arya Samaj. Thus sowing the seeds of future confrontation.'

It has come to our attention that Guru Nanak Nishkam Sevak Jatha has invited Swami Ramdev to gurdwara sahib. Swami Ramdev is currently on tour in UK who promotes yoga as a way of curing disease. As we know Sikhi gives no importance to yoga and yoga to a Sikh is nothing more then a physical means of exercise.

Swami Ramdev who has a yoga show on Aastha TV channel which is also associated with RSS, Hindu extremists, and further more has been exposed in the media for use of powder made of human skulls and animal parts in the ayurvedic medicines.

We are very disappointed at GNNSJ decision to allow and then publicise Swami Ramdev’s visit to the Gurdwara sahib.

SikhStudent Camp Issues - Meeting 1 Jul 2006, Gravesend, Kent

In response to the serious issue of the rumours that are going around regarding the SikhStudent Camp held annually in Chigwell, Essex. On the 1 July 06 a meeting was held in Gravesend Gurdwara, Khalsa Avenue attended by concerned members of the Sikh sangat from around the UK and the Camp organisers. Below is a summary by one of the attendees (taken from www.MrSikhNet.com)

On Saturday 1st July, I attended a public meeting held at Gravesend Gurdwara, Khalsa Avenue, organised by our local elders of Gravesend with elders from Slough, Southall, East London and Midlands attending the meeting. This included ex-campers and ex-sewadars of the Camp sharing what they witnessed at the camp, which I am sure if anyone heard would be horrified by. These organisers acknowledged and accepted these statements. The meeting was filmed on video by someone from the Sikh Student Camp and was also recorded on MP3 by the Sangat. Previous to this meeting I had heard various rumours and Internet bashing, however this was the first time both sides sat down and the Sangat were made to know the true reality of the situation.

I don’t want to write an essay about all the things discussed in the meeting however I would like to share that some “very serious” issues were raised. The main issues, which I heard at the meeting, were:

a) Promotion of Sanatan Dharma, a fundamentalist Hindu interpretation of Sikhism, e.g. we were told that by campers that they were told that the kachera comes from Hanuman (monkey god), men dressed as nihung singhs cut themselves and put blood on the khanda of the nishaan sahib for 2 or 3 years running, and campers have been told that the “true guru” is not solely guru granth sahib but “three Granths”, i.e. dasam granth, sarbloh granth and guru granth sahib make up the “Guru”.

b) Lack of observance of Sikh code of conduct in darbar and generally the camp - the camp organisers admitted that a Big Brother style video was shown in the darbar which included campers singing Bhangra songs about women and liquor, also we were made aware that amritdharis which had publicly renounced Sikhism by cutting their hair were asked to do kirtan, clapping was encouraged in the Darbar. The camp organisers admitted that they had no control to control the situation.

c) Campers, but worryingly sevadars in the camp not observing correct behaviour with campers in particular females. It was admitted there were issues with “over friendliness” and a female ex-camper shared that sexually disgusting things were said to her for two years running and to her friends by sevadars running “discussions”.

The conclusion of the meeting was that the Elders said if the Camp organisers, 50 in number, cannot control a group of 10 people who attended the camp and afterwards admitted to the Camp organisers that they wished to sabotage the camp, then how could they control a possible 20, 30 or 40 wrong campers?

A lady who was in charge of last year’s security of the camp nicely summarised that “Security is the most important thing in a Camp. For any good camp you need excellent security. If we don’t have the man-power or capability to control campers then we shouldn’t do a camp.” An Elder said that the Sangat could send 30 or 40 men to help the security and “save the camp” however at the same time that would cause tension and aggression with those who attend the camp with the intention of causing trouble and fighting at the camp is not a solution but would be a further problem.

Deep and serious issue, so let’s not jump the gun. It’s good that we are all concerned and wish to help out. So let’s do that. I was happy that Internet Rumours and “Hear-say” were cleared at the meeting and the Sangat were made aware of the “THE” truth so that they could move forward to actually help the Organisers to address issues of immoral conduct, promotion of Hinduism in Sikh appearance to campers, loose behaviour and how basic Gurdwara etiquette has been observed.

So let’s pray and let’s try to do something positive. May God help us in keeping Sikhism’s purity and sincerity.

A message left in regards to a letter sent to the Editors of Panthic Weekly in October 2005, complaining about the Chigwell SikhStudent Camp:

Is this camp still taking place this year? Is anyone doing anything to stop it?

My cousin (who is a mona) went to this camp and was told by one of these Naang Singhs that it is allowable for Singhs to visit prostitutes as long as they are not muslim.

Please can we do something about this Camp. Also elders must be aware of the parchaar that's happening at this camp.

Gurfatheh All.

Lets make this productive and not this fade away on the internet.

Instead of spreading rumours please can the people who HAVE BEEN please come forward and show your concerns by emailing and phoning the Sikh Student organizers.

Rumours don’t do anyone any good. So can the people who post messages on this and other forums please be ready to walk the walk rather than just talk the talk.

If you are REALLY concerned then do something about it. It’s easy to be a "Internet Warrior" in the comfort of your homes but reality is different not many are prepared to actually do anything.

So for those of us who want to do something here are a few Ideas.

Don't Torture Sikh Activist Extradited by U.S.

Security Forces Routinely Abuse Sikhs in Custody

(New York, June 20, 2006) – The Indian government must ensure that its security officials do not torture or mistreat Sikh separatist Kulvir Singh Barapind, who was extradited to India from the United States on June 17, Human Rights Watch said today. The Indian security forces have a long history of mistreating Sikh activists in custody.
Barapind’s account of being tortured in the past makes it even more likely that Indian security forces will abuse him again. If Barapind has committed crimes he should be prosecuted in a fair trial, but the Indian government must not allow its own forces to break the law to punish him.

Barapind has made credible allegations to a U.S. federal court that, before coming to the United States, Indian security forces in 1988 and 1989 tortured him to stop his political activism and to make him reveal the identities of other Sikh activists.

“Barapind’s account of being tortured in the past makes it even more likely that Indian security forces will abuse him again,” said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “If Barapind has committed crimes he should be prosecuted in a fair trial, but the Indian government must not allow its own forces to break the law to punish him.”

Barapind described to the U.S. court how the police suspended him in the air from his wrists with his arms tied behind his back, rolled a wooden log over his thighs to crush his muscles, tore his legs apart at his waist to a 180-degree angle, applied electric shocks, and beat him on the soles of his feet, among other methods. He also submitted evidence that Indian officials tortured his family and friends.

Human Rights Watch said that the greatest risk to Barapind, as with many criminal suspects in India, is during police remand, when suspects are detained at police stations for investigations with minimal oversight. The U.S. State Department’s annual country reports on human rights in India have demonstrated a pattern of custodial torture and death of alleged Sikh activists.

“Indian security forces have a long history of abusing criminal suspects and detainees by torturing them,” said Adams. “They’ve used those methods against politically active Sikhs without facing any punishment.”

Background

In the early 1980s, armed separatist groups in India’s Punjab state demanded an independent nation of Khalistan. These groups were responsible for numerous attacks, including indiscriminate bombings, politically targeted killings and killing of Hindus. The government gave the security forces a free hand to destroy the separatist movement, resulting in widespread killings, “disappearances” and torture.

The Punjab violence peaked in June 1984, when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi sent the Indian army into the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the most sacred of Sikh sites, which was being occupied by armed Sikh militants. The brutal battle left nearly 100 Indian security personnel and militants dead, and ended only after most of the militants inside, including militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, had been killed. Some militants were reportedly found with their hands bound and bullets in their heads.

Independent sources estimate that thousands of civilians also perished. The attack soon cost Indira Gandhi her life – two of her Sikh bodyguards assassinated her in October 1984. Blaming Sikhs in general rather than the individuals responsible, members of Gandhi's Congress party organized pogroms against Sikhs in the capital, New Delhi. Victims’ groups, lawyers and activists have long alleged state complicity in the violence.

For the next 10 years, the Indian security forces in Punjab targeted for murder, “disappearance” and arbitrary arrest politically active Sikhs and those who stood up for victims and their families. Violence and intimidation have continued at a lower level since then, but many Sikhs continue to talk of fear of the police and security forces and of receiving threats.

The Indian government asked the United States to extradite Barapind, a former student separatist leader in Punjab, on 11 charges of robbery, murder, attempted murder and conspiracy to murder. Judge Oliver Wanger of the federal district court in California dropped eight of the cases brought against Barapind in the extradition petition, five of them because they fell under the “political offense” exception in the extradition treaty between India and the United States.

In October 2005, the court certified Barapind’s extradition in the three remaining cases, involving six murders and one attempted murder. Barapind’s lawyers submitted evidence that the witness statements failed to identify Barapind or were procured through duress. They argued that if the United States extradited him knowing that he faced a risk of torture, it would be violating U.S. and international law, namely the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, which prohibits the return of individuals to countries where they are at risk of being tortured. The court found that the evidence used to support the three cases against Barapind satisfied the probable cause standard, and the political offense exception did not apply.

Before fleeing to the United States in 1993, Barapind was the national joint secretary of the Sikh Students Federation, a political group advocating for an independent Sikh state. Barapind was detained and allegedly tortured in 1988 and 1989 for his political activities. He went into hiding in 1990. The Indian government accused Barapind of being a member of the Khalistan Commando Force, a militant group at the time; Barapind denies being a member of the group.

Christian Missionaries are doing their fundamentalist Parchaar in Panjab. There is Panjabi Sikh man who is a Christian convert. He is Sikh guise (i.e. he wears a Dastaar and is in Sikhi Saroop), however is a Christian missionary who targets Panjabi Sikhs livin in UK to convert through twisting Gurmat to justify Jesus as Satguru and saying that Guru Nanak was the "Avtar" of the "True Guru" who apparently to this Pakhandi was Jesus.

This man operates in hospitals and other public institutions to spread his poison coated in sugar, and also spreads his RIDICULOUS Parchaar on the Internet. In the 80s him and his other Panjabi convert friends offered Sikh parents FREE baby-sitting services. People didn't realise that these Christian missionaries in Sikh dress were attempting to brainwash Sikh kids with ideas such as "Jesus is the True Guru". Eventually people found out and removed their children from these people's child care.

Threat To Blow Up Darbar Sahib!

Golden Temple security beefed up after terror threat

Chandigarh - Security around the Golden Temple - the holiest of Sikh shrines in the world - in Amritsar was beefed up Thursday evening following a threat to blow it up, police said.

The threat note, received by the stationmaster of the Jalandhar railway station Thursday, said terrorists would blow up several Sikh and Hindu places of worship across Punjab.

It specifically mentioned that Golden Temple and Durgiana Temple - both in Amritsar - would be blown up May 12.

‘We know that this could be a prank but we have to take any threat seriously,’ said a senior Punjab police officer. He added that security arrangements at important shrines and railway stations had been fortified.

The note warned that the railway stations at Amritsar, Jalandhar and Phagwara would also be blown up.

Police in Amritsar and Jalandhar districts and in Phagwara town were put on high alert.

Police barricades and check posts came up around the Golden Temple complex following the threat.

Officials of the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Punjab police were investigating the origin of the threat letter.

Police officials said that the letter seemed to have been written and posted from Punjab’s industrial town of Phagwara, 25 km from Jalandhar on national highway no. 1.

The threat letter said that the Hindu shrine of Vaishno Devi in Jammu and Kashmir and the Jammu railway station would also be blown up.

sikh student camp's priority or strategy of promoting sikhi seems wrong.

i went to sikh student camp with my friend.

the person who did all stage announcements was a mona. which i was kinda surprised with.

there were talks in the darbar hall which said its okay to do bhangra and sing "dhan guru nanak" if you are showing pyar for guru in this way coz someone mentioned "sindhi community" in pakistan do that. which didn't make sense to me.

a lot of "friendliness". my friend and i felt uncomfortable that our fellow campers were hugging singhs and singhs were hugging back and "honky dory" but there's a line to draw! right? i think london galz were more sensible. it was more of the midlandz lot which were in your face and jumping around.

there were some nice gursikh parjis and penjis at the camp doin seva. i was genuinely inspired by them and looked up to them. but some of the campers and nihangs (like balkar singh parji) were scary and sorry to say "nutters". i was genuinely scared to approach some people... i suppose they were approachable to others. depends on your personality i suppose. also most prob coz i am girl and feel easier talking to a penji.

the camp fire was bit spooky. everyone standing around a fire and "screaming" akaal. i felt as if i was going to have nightmares with people shouting "akaal" in my dreams. i mean people were taking the mick coz they were laughing and shouting and people were holding hands and moving side to side like they do in pop concerts while singing simran. nice idea. but me and few penjis felt uncomfortable so didnt join in with putting your arm around and going side to side and saying "vaheguru".

i did enjoy the kirtan. one of the parjis did nice shabads. and loved hearin what the paath meant. mornin and evenin the hukam was translated for stupid people like me to understand. really made sense. but i didnt like doing yoga in darbar coz i know some girls who's chunni kept falling down.

sorry if i have written to much. jus want to let everyone know that i experienced good things as well as bad things at the camp. jus hopes things get better and more sisters participate as sevadars coz i think they were a few short.

In the first of a two part series, Natasha Jalota shares her true-life experiences of victimisation on a university campus, at the hands of a guy she met during freshers.

About to start University, I was really excited. This would be a fresh start with new friends and a new beginning. During the first term I was nervous to talk to people, but this would be the only way I could make friends, so I made an effort to be friendly. I joined some societies such as the NHSF (National Hindu Students Forum).

All the people I met seemed so helpful and friendly. I assumed that this was because they were in the same situation as me, as new students on campus.

After lectures one Friday an Asian guy approached me. I didn't think anything of it apart from "He's just being friendly". His name was Wasif. We got chatting; he seemed like a nice guy. Even though he was a year older, he was in the first year, because he was re-sitting the year. Wasif gave me his number soon after meeting him and not thinking much of it I also gave him mine. We met up for Lunch on a few occasions; always chatting about usual things like how University was going and whether we've been out anywhere good. So yes we got on really well. But there was nothing more to it. Just like with my other friends, we used to text each other and spoke on the phone once in a while.

On the whole I had a good first semester. Before I knew it, it was the Christmas holidays. Doesn't time fly! It only felt like I moved to University not long ago and was already on my first vacation. With exams on their way in January, the stress started to pile! University actually started to feel real now. Everyone went home for the Christmas holidays, with loads of revision to do and deadlines to meet.

Wasif carried on texting me in the holidays. It was just general stuff; "How you doing?" "What you been up to?" "How's revision going?" And so on. So I just replied generally. Soon after that we started speaking more on the phone. Before I knew it he began to call all the time. After a while I started feeling really uncomfortable, because some questions he was asking started becoming a bit personal. I started ignoring some of his calls. It felt as if he wanted to know everything I did. It was really strange. Holidays were nearly over and I was getting a little worried. "Oh my god how do I avoid him during lectures," I thought to myself. It wasn't that I didn't want him as a friend, but just didn't want him calling me every minute.

University started. The first couple of days were spent settling back in. I didn't see Wasif around much, but then a week or two later suddenly he started texting me to meet up for lunch with him. I sometimes made excuses like "I've got loads of work on", but I couldn't do this forever. When I bumped into him, he would always pester me to come for a drink with him, even though I didn't drink alcohol. Sometimes I said I couldn't make it, but once in a while I got roped into going along. I'm sure he must have known there was something different with me.

Soon it was March, with my birthday approaching! A few weeks earlier, he asked me what I wanted. I was shocked, because I didn't know him that well that he should get me a present. I just told him "I don't want anything…don't be silly." This ended up in a big discussion, and he said he wanted to talk to me over a drink I just said "Yeh", thinking to myself that a quick chat wouldn't hurt.

We met up in the evening at about 6ish and started chatting. He was complimenting me on what I was wearing but it was only jeans and a normal top, which is what I usually wear at Uni. The evening flew by and it was nearly 10pm; I couldn't believe how a 'quick' chat turned into something that took a few hours! I told him its time I went back to my flat. Just as I was leaving he said "Hey Nats can I ask you a question", I just replied with "Yep sure," thinking in my mind, "What's wrong, what is this leading to". I was nervous. It felt like he took ages to ask, but that was probably because of me being so worried. He finally said "Nat's I really like you as a friend, we get on really well," and stopped there. I knew there was something strange going on with all the calls and text messages. I said "Yeh I know were good mates", he then stopped me and said "But can we not be more." I was so shocked. Even though I knew it was coming, I still wasn't prepared. I didn't know what to say, so just said, "Hey I better get going it's getting late." He told me to call him later in the night.

All my way home I was thinking, "Oh my god, what do I say, what do I do, what am I meant to call him about". Just as I reached home, my phone started ringing. I was thinking, "It's not even been half an hour since I left and he's already calling me". I didn't answer the phone. After an hour or so passed. I kept getting calls and messages from him saying "Nats why are you ignoring me?" I did feel bad not giving him a straight answer. I knew it was going to be a definite "NO", but wasn't sure how to let him off lightly. I text him and said "Wasif I'm really sorry but I can't, you're a good mate, but just a mate, sorry". A few days went by, and he kept calling and texting me. Then he asked me what were my reasons for not wanting to be with him. Even though I was frightened I told him the truth. The fact was he was of a different religion. I didn't want to have a relationship with someone from a different religion. That's the way I am. On top of that, my parents and family would be very hurt and disappointed; I couldn't do that for a guy I barely know. Wasif wasn't happy with this, but I was not one to be swayed.

A few months went by, he was still contacting me loads and sometimes the way he spoke to me was as if he thought we were more then friends. I felt really uncomfortable around him, and didn't want to be round him alone ever. I didn't think my first year of Uni would stress me out so much! But things were soon to get worse, much worse.

It wasn't too long before the Summer Vacation, and I was relieved to be able to get away from Wasif. He had begun texting me saying "I'm going to have you no matter what, just watch". I was initially worried, but then thought to myself, "How can he have me when I am saying no, obviously he's talking rubbish". But he carried on pestering me. Wasif told me I had to meet him during the holidays, but there was no way I was going to meet him alone". He started threatening me, saying that if I didn't meet him he would find out where I live and come to my house. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. How can all this happen just because I didn't want to be with him? I was getting scared of going back to Uni because although I could avoid him over the summer, what happens when I'm back at Uni with him there? Messages kept coming from him, with threats too. One particular message has stuck in my mind. It said "Hey, if you don't have a relationship with me I'm going to tell your parents you're going out with me and I stay over at your flat". I was worried sick and couldn't believe this was happening. Most people look back at Uni as the best days of their life? But for me it was turning the total opposite. He stressed me out so much that it began to show. My family started asking me "What's wrong, why are you so quiet." They noticed that I wasn't eating properly. It was all down to this situation. But I kept quiet about it. I was too afraid to tell them about the nightmare I was going through.

Back at Uni, I thought that he may have forgotten about it over summer, and I could start afresh. How wrong I was! It was the total opposite. He became more and more aggressive. I was suffering in silence. I didn't tell anyone about this - not even my best mate. People were always asking me what was wrong. I tried to act as normal as I could, but obviously there was a change in me. I became withdrawn and lost focus. I began to loose weight because of the stress I was in.

This carried on. A few months passed on, and one day, Wasif hit me with a new and even more shocking bombshell. He told me I had to convert to his religion. I was about to die of shock. Convert??? Why??? I would never do this. He brought me some religious books, with titles like "How to be a true Muslim" and so on, and said "You best start reading them." I refused to take them and told him to leave me alone and that being friends with him was the biggest mistake I had ever made. He became really aggressive and forceful. I was very scared and wondered how long this would go on and what I had done to deserve this. I thought to myself "How can this guy who seemed so down to earth and normal have turned out to be a religious fanatic and a psycho?"

Soon after, he threatened that he would go to my family and show them pictures of him and me together - sexually. I thought to myself "How can he do this, we haven't been together in any other way apart from at Uni". But something came to mind. He was very talented with graphics, including manipulating photographs. I had seen some really good pictures of him with celebrities, that all looked so real, even though they weren't. I couldn't put it past him that he could use the same techniques to make pictures of him and me. Now I was totally scared. What if he carried out his threat? What would my family think of me? What would everybody thing of me? Surely they would think it was somehow my fault.

Wasif then started asking me to pay him off. "Oh my God - pay him off?" All I did was tell him I didn't want a relationship, are you meant to pay guys off who you don't want to be with? How was I supposed to pay him off? I had a student loan myself and was frequently in overdraft. Surely if I was rich I wouldn't have had to have a student loan or be in overdraft.

Finally I ended up telling my sister, after nearly two years of going through hell. She told my parents. I was in tears while she was telling them. "I've really let them down", I thought to myself.

However, my parents were supportive. My fear that they would blame me was unfounded. They told me I had to tell the police because this guy shouldn't be allowed to get away with this. I was very afraid of what he might do and going to the police was the last thing I wanted. But my dad wouldn't take no for an answer. As parents they were obviously doing what they thought was best for me.

I finally went to the police to resolve this matter. I knew that Wasif would tell them a different story to mine. And yes, that's what happened. He said that it was me who asked him out and that he never asked me to pay him to leave me alone, but rather that he just wanted to borrow some money. After so many interviews we both had different stories, which meant the matter would have to go to court, which I couldn't handle. I just wanted my normal life back. So the police involvement ended there. But since the police became involved, it meant Wasif no longer contacts me in any way. And since then my life has finally changed for the better.

I know that there are other girls who are going though similar situations. If anyone is suffering or has suffered what I did - speak out. Please don't suffer in silence. If only I spoke sooner I wouldn't have lost my health, peace of mind and the first few years of my Uni, which could have been the best years of my life.

Amritsar Sahib (KP) - As reported by Panthic Weekly, Shahbaaz Khalsa and GURSIKH charged that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), under the guise of an newly created organization called the “Sangat Sansar Society”, was attempting to spread its anti-Sikh philosophy via a “Vaisakhi” function in Delhi in which it had openly invited the key Sikh leaders.

In a joint press conference, Bhai Amardeep Singh ‘Amar’, Bhai Sukhmander Singh Karmuwal, of Shahbaz Khalsa detailed the nefarious activities that the RSS has set forth for the Vaisakhi day. These follow a well-established pattern of intermingling and blurring of Sikh and Hindu beleifs, changing of history and attempts at Hinduization of the Sikh faith. They had submitted a memorandum to Akal Takhat Sahib requesting to restrain the Sikhs from attending the RSS function. The invited leader included Paramjit Sarna, head of SAD (Delhi), Tarlochan Sinh, ex-chair of NCM, and Joginder Sinh, a former director of the CBI, among others.

Several media outlets stated that, Paramjit Sarna has disscociated himself from the function and has declined to attend because of the controversy created by the Shahbaz Khalsa and GURSIKH.

10 SECRETS RADICAL MUSLIMS DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW

1. Islam is a MISSIONARY religion committed to CONVERSION, according to the Koran the world is divided up into 2 parts, Dar-as-Islam (House of Faith) a title which applies to all Islamic countries and Dar-al-Harb (Household of War), land not yet surrendered to Allah, which is the rest of the world. 2. Conversions of Sikh men and women is becoming an increasing problem, hundreds of reported and verified conversions in the last few years. Dozens of cases were reported in October 1995 alone, when the new academic year started also converted. Universities in London, Bradford and Luton are particular problem areas.

3. At the Hizb-ut-Tahrir ( HUT ) conference at the Wembley arena in August 1994, a Sikh was converted on stage in front of 8000 cheering and clapping Muslims. The Sikh girl then proceeded to attack Sikhism making particularly offensive statements against the Sikh Gurus. The audience laughed and continued to cheer. Some of this speech was televised on satellite T.V and on the HUTs pirate radio station. Muslim leaders at the conference called for an intensification of the campaign to bring Sikh and Hindu women to Islam. The same thing happened at HUTs Rally for Islam conference in Trafalgar Square, August 1995. This time 2 Hindu women were converted on stage in front of 2000 cheering Muslims. Again Muslim leaders demanded that Muslims boys try harder to convert Sikh and Hindu girls.

4. The self appointed Muslim parliament of Britain passed a resolution demanding that the British government make it illegal for Muslim women to marry non-Muslim. It also called for the banning of conversions of Muslims to other faiths. Any Muslim who did convert was to be stoned to death according Islamic tradition. Thankfully, the British government did not take their demand seriously, but the event showed the Muslims double standards and hypocrisy.

5. HUT leaders issued a directive in January 1995 to specially selected male members telling them to place Ads in personal columns of national newspapers inviting relationships from Asian women, they were told to write the religion and nationality of the girl were unimportant and be ambiguous about their own backgrounds by for example only describing themselves as Asian.

They were further told to form intimate relationships specifically with Sikh girls with the aim of conversion. The expense of any dates were to be paid by the HUT.

6. Certain Muslims have taken to wearing Karas (Sikh steel bracelet) at Bhangra gigs with the aim of specifically seeking to meet Sikh girls. When meeting the Girls, these people identify themselves in such a way that the girl does not realise that they are Muslim, for example by shortening the name Mohammed to Mohan. They form relationships with the girl and begin the slow path to conversion.

7. A Muslim bent on converting somebody, will spin a web of lies. For example girl converts are tricked into believing that men and women are equal in Islam.

They are not told that rape victims according to the Koran have produce 4 Male witnesses of good character to say that they were raped or they will be charged with adultery and stoned according to Islamic tradition (hundreds of cases where this has occurred are on file with Amnesty International, contact them for further information). Also according to the Koran, all a man has to do to divorce his wife is say Talaq 3 times. For women of course getting a divorce is much harder. The new method that they are employing is to change their names by deed poll to Mohan Singh and Balraj Singh , they add surnames on to Gill and Hayer are two of there favorites. 8. HUT leadership has instructed its members to specifically target problem groups of conversion. These include young teenage girls, people with social problems, the recently bereaved and victims of abuse as children. These people are considered to be weak willed and easily manipulated once identified the Muslim will try to convince their target that Islam will somehow solve all their problems. Incidentally in 1992 the hut produced an article telling Muslim men to particularly target non-Muslim girls with plain or unattractive physical, facial or body features. These girls the article said would not be accustomed to this attention and thus be easier to lure. It went on to say that the discomfort you may feel in such relationships, especially if intimate is only temporary however the rewards you will receive in Heaven will last for eternity.

9. The HUT has instructed Muslims to work in groups when converting, with one person forming a very close friendship with their target. The group then works to find out the strengths and weaknesses of the person involved and then will work accordingly. If for example, the person loves sport and is very athletic, they boast how Islam actively encourages sport and how some of the world's best sportsmen such as Muhammad Ali, Tyson and Imran Khan are Muslims.

If the person has a strongly anti-white attitude, then they will stir up racial hatred against whites even more by talking about past white injustices against them. This policy has been used effectively with Afro-Caribbeans, with whom they talk about the slave trade and give Malcolm X as role model (Muslim groups leafleted black cinema audiences watching Malcolm X when it was released ). Similarly, the hard up have been offered well-paid jobs with Muslim businesses providing they convert.

10. Forced conversions do occur. There have been many documented cases when Sikh and Hindu girls have been taken to Pakistan by their Muslim boyfriends and forcibly converted. Conversions into Islam are are encouraged on those people who have Ignorance or Misunderstanding of Sikhi. Take time to understand your religion and educate others. Be aware of the subtlety of the process of conversion.

Depending on the person's ignorance/ knowledge of Sikhi- the progressive undermining of Sikh Religion occurs through misquoting religious texts and falsifying historical events. The HUT and other Muslim groups have said that they aim to make FRANCE, an ISLAMIC REPUBLIC by the year 2015 and Britain by 2025 through CONVERSIONS, IMMIGRATION and high MUSLIM BIRTH RATES.

Fanatics are on record as having vandalised books on Sikhism and religious texts such as the Guru Granth Sahib in Council, School, and college libraries. False propaganda and messages are written on covers and pages for the readers of the book. These messages usually attempts to UNDERMINE your faith by MISQUOTING religious texts and distorting reality. Check your local library especially if you live in an area with a history of trouble.

Recent events have shown that radical Islamic groups have become increasingly envious of our Sikh prosperity in the West. Certain Islamic leaders have told worshippers to hurt kafir Sikhs economically.

The Economist Magazine (June 17th 1995 edition ) reported that no Sikh youths took part in the Bradford riots, only Muslim males. Sikh businesses were attacked. In fact other reports state that older, masked Muslims ( thought to be HUT ) went down the streets ahead of everyone else, and specifically marked out Sikh shops with spray paint, for destruction by rioters following them.

The HUT produced and circulated articles in universities, stating that Jewish and Sikh students were dogs and must be removed from higher education. (As reported in the Guardian, 31st October 1995 edition). The Muslims have realised that the power, respect, money and knowledge and influence brings makes us more powerful enemies. The harassment and bullying of Sikh students at schools and colleges (by such acts as the storming of West Thames college in Jan 1995) is part of a wider strategy.

Sikh youths must strive to get highly educated as they possibly can. University students should act as role models and encourage younger members of the community to get an education. This will greatly benefit not only you and your family, but help your community.

Muslim Youths have been instructed to infiltrate all organisations and positions of authority they can. They have also been told to keep their Islamic fundamentalist secret and subtly remove our community from a position within these organisations. For example, they have been directed to join Student Union bodies, the Media, anti-racist groups community groups, councils and political parties.

Afghan on trial for Christianity

An Afghan man is being tried in a court in the capital, Kabul, for converting from Islam to Christianity.

Abdul Rahman is charged with rejecting Islam and could face the death sentence under Sharia law unless he recants.

He converted 16 years ago as an aid worker helping refugees in Pakistan. His estranged family denounced him in a custody dispute over his two children.

It is thought to be Afghanistan's first such trial, reflecting tensions between conservative clerics and reformists.

Trial judge Ansarullah Mawlazezadah told the BBC that Mr Rahman, 41, would be asked to reconsider his conversion, which he made while working for a Christian aid group in Pakistan.

"We will invite him again because the religion of Islam is one of tolerance. We will ask him if he has changed his mind. If so we will forgive him," the judge told the BBC on Monday.

But if he refused to reconvert, then his mental state would be considered first before he was dealt with under Sharia law, the judge added.

He said he expected the case to take about two months to be heard.

Precedent

The Afghan Human Rights Commission has called for a better balance in the judiciary, with fewer judges advocating Sharia law and more judges with a wider legal background.

Several journalists have been prosecuted under blasphemy laws in post-Taleban Afghanistan.

The editor of a women's rights magazine was convicted of insulting Islam and sentenced to death last year - but was later released after an apology and heavy international pressure.

Mr Karzai's office says the president will not intervene in the case.

Observers say executing a converted Christian would be a significant precedent as a conservative interpretation of Sharia law in Afghanistan.

But it would also outrage Western nations which put Mr Karzai in power and are pouring billions of dollars into supporting the country.

Changes to Rehat Maryada

The amendment in the Sikh 60-year-old Rehat Maryada by the SGPC has evoked a strong reaction from Sikh intellectuals.
Mr Gurcharnjit Singh Lamba, a Sikh intellectual and Editor of monthly ‘Sant Sipahi’, has said the Sikh Maryada was formulated after marathon discussions and hence any amendment without taking the Sikh Panth into confidence was unacceptable to the sangat. He was here today to pay his obeisance at Harmandar Sahib.

A comparative study of two versions of the ‘Sikh Rehat Maryada’ - one of 1945 and the recent one published by the SGPC - shows glaring discrepancies.
Questioning the wisdom of changing the Article on re-marriage, Mr Lamba alleged the amendment was aimed to benefit certain influential persons who had indulged in bigamy. The original Rehat Maryada clearly mentions that no Sikh could remarry when his wife was alive. However, the amended Maryada has added the word ‘generally’ that reads, “Generally, no Sikh should marry a second wife if the first wife is alive.”

Another glaring amendment in the new version is on the definition of a Sikh. The Punjabi version of the original Maryada gives the definition of a Sikh as “Any human being who believes in all Sikh Gurus in One Immortal Being, (ii.) Ten Gurus, from Guru Nanak Sahib to Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, (iii.) Guru Granth Sahib, and the utterances and teachings of the 10 Gurus and baptism bequeathed by the tenth Guru, and who does not owe allegiance to any other religion, is a Sikh.

However, the amended Punjabi version has deleted ‘Dassan’ (meaning all 10 from Guru Nanak to Guru Gobind Singh).

Mr Lamba further alleges that the deletion of ‘plucking of gray hair’ from the new version of Maryada was a blunder on the part of the SGPC.
He also criticised a section of the Sant Samaj for pursuing its own Maryada which was in sharp contrast to the original version, passed with the consent of the Sikh sangat.

Gurbani as a cure of cancer.

When recitation of Gurbani cured me of deadly cancer, I experienced God. If God is with me, who can be against me? Not even the deadliest disease of cancer can take my life away and that is exactly the divinely inspiring message of the truly miraculous story of my victorious battle against bone
cancer which was medically diagnosed to be multiple myloma.

It was the continuous recitation of Gurbani that not only cured me of bone cancer that had already destroyed most of my bones in my skeleton, but also shattered my will to live. The blessings of Guru Granth Sahib not only triggered and accelerated the processes of complete and total cure in my body, but the Guru also enabled me to experience God. This also inspired me to pursue Nam therapy to totally and permanently get rid of otherwise fatal bone cancer.

Can Shabad-Kirtan and faithful recitation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib save me from fatal clutches of cancer? Can such a miracle happen?

These were the posers that repeatedly crossed my mind and also dominated my dreams. Initially, I dismissed such ideas and being a science researcher with American educational background, I did not even believe in the existence of god. I have always been taught by my American scientists, teachers and professors that our life and the universe are governed by the irrefutable and irreversible laws of science and that God was nothing but a 'concept' or an illusion invented by timid and non-scientific minds. Hence, I have never been to any place of worship and also never prayed. But not anymore.

It was April 27th 2002 when three different teams of oncologists and hematologists from Mumbai, Surat and Ahmedabad presented me with the unanimous medical investigation reports based on their repeatedly unanimous findings, they passed their judgment with one voice that my life is going to end in a few days as the deadly cancer called multiple myloma has ruined most of my bones that are functionally vital for my survival. On April 29th , I had completed three and half years of painful life as a terminally bed-ridden cancer patient. I was slowly dying of cancer. The bony structures of my right ear had been eaten away by bone cancer that gave me total deafness in my right ear. Repeated audio graphs done by several E.N.T. surgeons proved beyond doubt that the decibel loss was irreversible and so immense that Dr. A.B.R. Desai in Mumbai, who is reputed to be the final authority on E.N.T. ailments, told me that there was something very tragically wrong with the bones in my right year and after trying several treatments, Dr. Desai told me that he has no medicine for my ailment and that I will never be able to hear with my right ear. The reputed E.N.T. surgeon Dr. Farida Wadia of civil hospital was of the opinion that if the loss of hearing in the right year was not due to nerve deafness and was really a symptomatic manifestation of some un-diagnosed ailment then the hearing will return after that un-diagnosed ailment is cured. Is she blessed with 6th, 7th and 8th sense? I guess say so because that is exactly how the events ran their course.

Dr. Farida Wadia was also using her imagination like telescope in time and exactly predicting things which were yet to come. Later, it was Dr. Kiran Shah, the senior most reputed oncologist hematologist in Surat who himself performed bone marrow analysis and gave me the shocking news that I am not only suffering from bone cancer called multiple myloma but the cancer has already destroyed much my vital bones. As per his advise, electrophoresis of the blood and MRI - [ magnetic resonance imaging] - of brain and skull as well as Citi Scan were also done at Mahavir General Hospital which confirmed beyond doubt that I am slowly but surely dying of bone cancer. I had been loosing appetite and had developed dislike for food. [anorexia nervosa] in between, I had also suffered from tumor on the right side of my head which gave me excruciating headache and giddiness. I lost orientation and would fall after walking for 30 seconds. As soon as cancer was diagnosed, I was immediately admitted to government civil hospital and six chemotherapy sessions were administered – one every 28th day. This further destroyed my appetite and all the hair on my head and body were gone. I suffered these agonies for more than three and half years when on April 27th 2002, three teams of doctors and oncologists advised me that I should prepare my will as I had only a few days left.

Now, this was the phase when the divine miracle began to take shape. It was Sardar Kesar Singh, the owner of reputed " Kwality Group of Hotels and Restaurants" in Surat and his son Sardar Manjeet Singh, who suggested to me that I should undertake a pilgrimage to the holy Golden Temple at Amritsar and offer Akhand Paath and Ardaas with complete faith and total devotion and pray before Sri Guru Granth Sahib to cure me of my cancer and bless me with good vibrant health and long life to remain in his service. I initially, took this suggestion very lightly and argued back that I do not understand Punjabi or Gurmukhi and would therefore, not follow any word of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and whatever brief knowledge of Sikhism and Sri Guru Granth Sahib I acquired was in April of 1999, when I wrote six researched articles on the 300 years of Khalsa celebrations published in the Indian press. But, Sardar Kesar Singh, who is also the president of Gurdwara at Udhana-Surat, convinced me that Sri Guru Granth Sahib's blessings are not restricted to those who speak or understand Punjabi or Gurmukhi. It is the faith and sincere devotion to the Guru which makes you worthy of his blessings.

I found Sardar Kesar Singh's advice very much inspiring. Moreover, my sister-in-law Miss Kunti, a staunch devotee of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and a faithful follower of principles of Sikhism since her childhood, was equally instrumental in motivating me to undertake this pilgrimage. She taught me the basic philosophy of Sikhism and brought me a copy of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in English. My mother-in-law Ms.Shanti Hotchand Khatri, have a separate room at their bungalows at Baroda where they offer prayers, Ardaas and listen to Shabad Kirtans every early morning. Their persuasion proved to be decisive.

So we left by Golden Temple Mail express train which departed from Surat at around 1-15 a.m. on April 29th 2002. We were received by the staff of Golden Temple and particularly Sardar Diljeet Singh Bedi who is in charge of liaisons with press and the public. Myself being a leading journalist, foreign-educated researcher and U.S.A. trained science writer, was given a VIP treatment and given accommodation in room no. 16 of Sri Arjan Dev Niwas. Since I had only a few days to live according to my doctors, they quickly made preparations for Akhand Paath and Ardaas after I paid Rs 2100 as fees. My wife Kanta, my daughter Halley and my brother-in-law's daughter Puja also sat with me. I was permitted to photograph and tape-record entire Akhand Paath as well as Shabad Kirtans which I wanted to keep listening till I was to breathe my last on my death - bed.

But I was never to be lying on my death-bed because the moment the Granthi started reciting the Akhand Paath , I began to feel streams of energy entering and flowing thru my body. It rose majestically from the pages of Shri Guru Granth Sahib like a serene cool flame of light entering my body through my fingers. The excruciating pain which I had suffered while struggling to reach the Golden Temple also disappeared. After 48 hours, I got up on my own two feet and began to feel and enjoy such vibrant health that I almost ran with joy towards Sri Arjan Dev Niwas and quickly climbed the stairs to my room no. 16. My appetite returned. I first took bath and then visited Jaliyanwala Bagh and then went to the 'Hotel Cityheart' and for the first time in three and half years I enjoyed a variety of Punjabi and Chinese foods which I had missed like deserts miss the rains.

We returned to Surat on 18th May 2002 and on 25th May again bone marrow analysis and electrophoresis tests were done on my body. No cancer was detected. Hence, to obtain second medical opinion, the samples were sent to Mumbai and Ahmedabad and medical doctors there also confirmed that the bone cancer is gone. My oncologist at Ahemedabad Dr. Pankaj Shah was preparing for stem cells transplant on me which was to have cost me Rs. nine lakhs. The entire medical world was taken by surprise. All doctors agreed that this is, indeed, a miracle because there is no medicine in Allopathy that can cure deadly cancer within 48 hours and effect a 180 degree change. The latest electrophoresis : serum protein test done is dated April 7th 2003 at Abha Clinical Laboratory. The doctors have signed this medical test report with comments: " no myeloma band."

I have preserved all the medical reports and x-rays done before and after the Akhand Paath and Ardaas at Golden Temple and they all tell the true story of my miraculous cure. It is the miracle and the divine magnetic spell of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, which I also realized through Nam therapy that has not only blessed me with healthy life but considering my greatly vibrant health, spiritual strength and new youthful looks and glamorous shining black hair, the same oncologists tell me that I am totally free of all kinds of diseases. I myself feel so close to the Guru that something tells me that I will live for 125 years and remain in Guru's service and bring true love, happiness and inspiration to all my friends.

My life has taken a spiritual turn. I get sound sleep without any sleeping pills. Since 25th April 2002, I am no longer on any medicine. I read Nitnem and get sound sleep and get up early to read Paath and enjoy Shabad Kirtan on Punjabi TV channel. Guru's teachings have gone a long way in dispelling the darkness of ignorance. Guru has not only changed my destiny but made me a devotee with the faith that is not blind but enlightened.

So often, I see and meet Gurus in my dreams and they taught me a new healthy life-style to give happiness to others. I am never angry. I have no bad habits and always remain jovial. Now, my motto is: ' people enjoy the happiness they feel. But I enjoy the happiness I give. Guru's one of the teachings says : " Kirat Karani and Wand Chhakana." - meaning: earn the fruits of your hard work ‘Naam Japana’; and share your fruits with others with love. I believe in the sun even when it is not shining. I believe in love even when not feeling it. I believe in God even when he is silent. There is one God. God is truth. He is the creator of the universe and all beings. He is without fear and without hatred. He is the eternal being and the divine soul, birth less, self enlightened. He is enemy to none. Through grace of the Satguru he is met. Diseases and sins are destroyed by hearing the name of God says Guru Nanak. "First of all before I start telling you what happened with me, Iwould like to thank my paa ji who showed me how my sorrow could besomeone else s relief. Thank you paa ji.
My story started when I was 16 years old living in Handsworth,wehad just finished our last GCSE exams. To celebrate, we alldecidedto go to a "bhangra gig" during the day, as we knew we would nothave beenallowed to go in the night. There were 4 of us, best of friends, we decided to go, although we knew we would get intotrouble if are parents found out, but we thought that we "only live once" and as it was a special occasion, so we went.

This was the first time any one of us had done something likethis,it was an experience.When we got there we could not believe how many people ourage werethere from all over Birmingham, allAsian! I was shocked more than my friends, there were people drunk, boys/girls smoking, this was the new generation of Asians enjoying the western world freedoms. I remember saying to my friends, "We need to stick together, no matter what happens", we honestly did not know what was going to happen once we were inside. Once we got in, they were playing some old bhangra tune? The whole place was packed with "apnaay". Everyone was just so chilled out,it was unbelievable. We got to a side of the club, and juststoodthere staring at every one dancing, flirting and of coursefighting.

About an hour later, we were approached by this really nice looking guy, came over to my mate and startedchatting, wethen noticed the "Kara" on his arm so we assumed it was ok tochatto him, his name was "Mick". We were then introduced to his mates, all of them were really smart and good looking.And we were enjoying this mingling with boys for the first time,we felt both scared and excited, because we had never done this before. They brought us drinks, and encouraged us to have somealcohol something we all strongly at that time refused, butoncewe paired up and went our separate ways everything changed (Ineversaw my friends again until a couple hours later, dancing withsomestrangers, and they were not themselves. I could not believe it, they were drunk! We justified dancing the way we were as weal ways danced at wedding parties.) I went over to them to see what had happened, they totally ignored me and encouraged me to drink which I then did. My dad would drink a lot so I assumed it be ok).

We left the club at the end, it was about 4 o' clock, I remember thinking how the hell are we going to get home? We were giggling, and we were late and drunk. I knew my gran would, phone my mum at work if I did not get home in the next 20mins, (I was normally home about 3:50pm, and it was alreadytenpast four, I was in the middle of Birmingham City centre, 40 mins away from home by bus!! I was so scared, I knew I was going to get into serious trouble once I got home, and I smelt strongly of smoke and alcohol. My dad was going to kill me. We did not know what to do? Then the guys, who we were dancing in the club, came over and asked us if we were alright? or if we needed anything?, i.e. a lift home, because we were so desperate, we said yes. They dropped us home, we exchanged numbers and they went. I got slapped that day, my dad went absolutely mad, because I had lied, went to a club, danced with boys and got drunk! The whole family was really upset. I remember thinking I will never do anything like this again. Myfriends got the same treatment.

It was not until a couple of weeks later, that some one keptringing my house number, anonymous caller, and my gran, bless her,would go over to answer the phone, but no reply. Then one day, as my gran was cooking my roti, the phone rang and I answered, it was that guy from the club. I didn't know what to do. I was scared and yet anxious to what might happen. He wanted us to meet up again, he wanted to know how we were?
This was going to be my first relationship. I got to know "Abs" over the next couple of months,we would arrange,the best times for him to call me, it was exciting, no one knew about him, I felt needed and loved. He was18 at the time, and I had just turned 16. He drove a really nice car and worked for his uncle, in I.T.

It got to a stage were we would meet up in the middle of the night,I would sneak out of my house, he would pick me up at the bottom of my street, and we would go every where together I was lovingevery minute of it and every time we would not see eachother, Ifelt like dying I was truly in love with him. I did notice that the he was not Punjabi, he dressed different to normal Punjabi boys that age, and he didn't drink and smoke. He knew a lot of Muslims,but I decide to ignore that fact, as I was having the time of my life.I had a funny feeling he was Muslim, but he wore a Kara? and I never had the courage to ask him, because I didn t want to ruinanything between us. But finally that day came when he revealed that he must go to the mosque, I was taken back, I didn t know how to respond, my boyfriend was a Muslim, and I loved him too much to let him go. I asked him about his name, his nickname was Abs. he had told me his name was Harbinder, but in fact his name was Yasseen. This was a distressing situation, he had lied to me and led me on to believe he wasSikh,but was in fact a Muslim. I confronted him, I asked him, you knew I was a Sikh, then why did you get into this relationship with me? He answered my question with a question, does it matter? And I remember replying "No" after a few minutes, I thought to myselfhe's not your typical Muslim, and he has treated me withrespect.It was a hard time, I felt like breaking up with him, he was aMuslim, it wouldn't work? But I could not help it, he loved me,I loved him, and I kept reminding myself, he was different, andallthose good times we had duringthe start of our relationship.

So we decided to give it a shot, (what fool I was), we would spenda lot of time together, he got me job at his uncle s firm, theyalltreated me with respect although I was a Sikh, and all of them were Muslim, they were so nice to me. I felt wanted and at home with me boyfriends family. We saw each other for over 2 year's (all through collage) and then came the time for me to leave my home and go to university, I went out of town a good few hours away, I wanted to live as far as away from my family as possible, as they were the obstacle, in my life from him. I had stopped wearing my Kara and my gold khanda necklace. I also stopped going to the Gurdwara, because I did not want to offend him, and I would use that time instead to be with him. I loved him and would do any thing for him, any thing.

At university. Things got a bit serious, I lived in halls first, but everyone would look at me and call me names to my face and behind my back, they even trashed my flat twice!! All because I was going out with a Muslim, I would try to explain to them, he was different and he loved me, they would not have noneof it, I felt so bad, he had to go through a lot because of me.This was a really bad experience for me, and I felt vulnerable and weak. Things started to change a lot during the first few week sat my university.

I quit uni, and moved into a flat with him, he got me another job,and again his cousin helped us financially. I never told my parents that I had done this, they would phone me, I would say everything was going excellent, and I would lie to them. During this time, I started to stop going home, I would say that I had too much uni work to do, and so I couldn't come home.
Then, I stopped answering my phone from my family and friends, because I knew all they would say is to stop seeing him, and come home etc. So I changed my number, that's not the only thing I changed, a few months later I changed my name!

We were happy together, we were in love, we were made for each other!! A few months later I even changed my faith, I became a Muslim, I was happy then to finally be apart of something that was so great, everyone loved me, and I was finally at home and peace. Islam then offered everything to me, it made sense and was the truth, Sikhism had to many flaws in it, or that is what I was told, and I believed everything he said, it all made sense, Sikhism was a man-made religion, it believed in caste (we had Gurdwara made on caste) we would make our women dance half naked on bhangra video's, while Islam would teach us to cover the women because she is so precious, like an diamond.

I was duped, I knew nothing about Sikhism, my parents never told me, and I never learnt anything at the Gurdwara, never understood what the Granthi's were saying. And as a result I believed everything he told me. We then decided to get married, but he said we should go to Pakistan to that, because his sisters were there, and they were all dying to meet me! So I agreed, we went.

The year was 1994, I was 19 years old. What I am about to tell you now, is the most disturbing part of my life, I have had to receive medical treatment from Doctor's on a regular basis for a long period, due to this. I would like to say something before I continue, what I am about to tell you, is no exaggeration in any way, this is exactly how it happened, and the metropolitan police are well aware of it. Whilst I was on the flight over to Pakistan, I was so excited, I was finally going to get married to the love of my Life, I never thought about my family or friends, as I had everything I ever needed through him. And because I was taught to believe that they were the devil, they will take me to hell, and I did not want to got here. When we reached Pakistan, there were a few people there to greet us, I had worn the hi-jab, as a sign of respect to my new in-laws and faith. They were so happy to see me. We were then herded into a 4x4, and then of we went to meet the rest of Yasseen's family.

We were driving for a few hours, and I was absolutely worn out. We then stopped at what seemed to be a police station or the local sheriff's office, the luggage was taken out of the jeep, and these men came and took the luggage away, Yasseen came over and took my personal belongings, everything, my passport, money even my toothbrush, he said the police wanted to check our things, incase we were smuggling drugs, I remember laughing at first, but when I looked at his face, he was deadly serious, I gave him every thing and then I was taken to a room, where I was told to wait.

They asked Yasseen questions. It seemed like ages, while I waited in that room, on my own. I was getting very worried for Yasseen. During this time, two more cars and a jeep had come to this police station. Finally, a middle aged man came over and started to ask me personal questions. I had trouble understanding what he was saying, he spoke so fast, in Urdu. I kept asking him to take me to Yasseen. He said "Yasseen has gone", those three words stopped my heart beating, I was alone in a remote village in Pakistan, with no belongings and locked up a room. I did not know what to think? What was happening? This was not supposed to happen? Where had Yasseen gone? I cried, and pleaded with the men there to take me to Lahore, they would simply laugh at me and beat me. For a few days, I did not eat or sleep, I was disorientated, and I did not know what to do? I became ill, I was very weak, a doctor was called, he gave me some medicine, with which all I did was sleep.

The next thing I remember was, when I woke up in a room, with a small barred window, and a small door. This door was locked from the outside, I started to scream, a women came rushing over. I was relieved for a moment that women had come over to my aid, until she started to shout at me and curse me. I didn't know what was going on. I just sat there in that small, cold room, with blank mind. They would give some bread and water three times a day.
I was allowed to go to the toilet only once a day. By now I had realized, I was not going home and Yasseen was not coming to my rescue. The building I stayed at was 3 storeys, and was very big. It must have had more than 30 rooms. It was the only building there, there was nothing anywhere around this building, just fields and 1 tarmac road. It was a brothel. I was not a lone there were 3 other girls (Sikh) that were in the same situation as me. We were all kept on the top floor, we were all given one room each. The other girls had been there longer than me, we would get a chance to speak during the night. They told me of their stories and how they got here, they sounded familiar.

It would be very cold during the night. They told me, on the 3rd day, what happens here. This where, the locals came to enjoy themselves. I was very frightened. This is where they would come to quench their desires. I remember how they treated us, they would treat us like animals, they would rape us, and then spit on our faces after they were done. It was a living night mare, with no escape. I spent 15 months here, over that period of time, I have seen 36 more girls been brought here, I have seen 7 commit suicide, by jumping of the building and 20 odd taken away by rich businessmen who would use them in their own brothels. I saw and lived in HELL, I saw young girls being raped, I herd the screams of these girls and their frustration, that no one would help them.

When I first saw the police approach the building, I thought that we had been saved, was I proved wrong, they beat a girl to death right in front of us all, to show us who was in charge, and what would happen if we didn’t co-operate. If you think for a second, that what I am saying is lies, go and approach the Scotland Yard, they have the full details of who the girls were and where they were from. I saw this with my own eyes, and no-one ever helped us.
A time came when me and another girl, got the opportunity to escape, we had been taken to a local tribesmans house, a fight had broken out, in his house, in the confusion Guru ji gave us an opportunity to escape, we took a jeep, and set out on the roads, we didn’t t know where we were going, we just went, where ever the road took us. We got close to a town Called Eminabad, here we informed the police of what had happened tous, they helped us, we were handed over to the British embassy and sent back to the UK. Once back in the UK, the police tried to hand us back to our families, OUR OWN families had disowned us, my family told me to go away, that I had brought shame to the family name, I tried to apologies, and they would not accept it. I even tried to get help form the Gurdwara, they said they could not help us. We had to go back to the police, who then put us in a witness protection programme. The year is 1996, I was then 21. We both were given a new chance to start a fresh; the police helped us a great deal. In the programme we were given a place to stay and they gave us new jobs, tore build our lives. I am now 29, married and a 3 year old girl.
I re-initiated into Sikhism in 1998, me and my friend, we took Amrit and took an active role to combat what had happened to us and help others in the same situation. There is not a single second that goes by, without me thinking about those poor girls locked up in Pakistan. I have been scared for life. But I must do everything I can to try to create awareness to help those girls that scream every night and go through that abuse. I am thankful to the Police who are trying to help those girls, but I think we as a community need to do much more. We must come out of hiding, and face the danger these girls now face. But what we find is a really negative attitude employed by all parties, the families, Gurdwara and the girls, to do any thing about this. I know what happened to me and what is still happening to those that are in Pakistan.

Accordingly to the latest figures, there are 300 girls there right now, facing constant abuse, who are getting drugged up everyday and then raped. One of them is your relative!! Just keep that I mind, your cousin who you have not seen for over 3 years, went to university and never came back! When you ask your uncle and auntie, where is your cousin who you nor your family have seen for so long, you get the reply, that she has brought a house there and she has found herself a good job, and so she is constantly busy. I beg you please stop these lies, please help my sisters' in Pakistan, who no-one helps, their families are too scared, or they don't know where she is? We must put a stop to this, I saw what is happening there, believe me, I do not even wish this to happen my enemies, when you see a young girl being raped by savages, who beat her and then spit on her you remember God, believe me when all you can hear is her screams to stop and her cry for help all you can do is watch. Those girls need your help! I pray all the time to Guru, to please help, those girls, every time I get the chance. We must make sure not a single girl goes to that living Hell from today. We must educate every one of our girls and boys about our religion. We must take it upon our selves to educate our selves and our own families about Sikhism and the dangers it faces constantly.
We must thrive to make sure this never happens to any girl, irrelevant of her religion ever again. I hope Guru Ji helps us. I hope you at least help your self and your own family. I would like to thank both the Pakistan and British police that are trying to combat this increasing trend, I hope all those that took those poor girls over to Pakistan, realize that God is within us all, and not just in the heavens, I wish they could just imagine for 1 single second, that one of those girls was their own sister! No one would ever want this to happen to anyone, believe me. We have altered the above account to safe guard our source. The name and locations have been changed and how our penji escaped has been changed dramatically for the simple reason not to je pordise any other girls opportunity to escape. VIOLENT Islamic extremists are terrorising inmates at Britain's toughest jail with an iron fist as they trawl for al-Qaeda recruits.

The gang of thugs - known as The Muslim Boys - intimidate frightened inmates at Belmarsh into joining their faith, beating those who refuse their bullying demands.

Some bloodied victims have been slashed by razor blades attached to toothbrushes. Others have had boiling water hurled over them. Prisoners say they are in fear for their lives.

The brutal brotherhood - whose gang on the outside is the Yard's Public Enemy No 1 - also host weekly "religious" meetings where it is feared members are groomed for terrorism by al-Qaeda chiefs.

Watching guards are helpless to take action as they do not understand what is being said. Some have been attacked at the "services".

In a bid to break the network, leaders have been transferred to other jails. But others step into their shoes.

The reign of terror is disclosed in a leaked report - seen by the Mirror - from Belmarsh's head of security.

Referring to a review in December, it declares: "Prisoners reported abuse, assaults, intimidation and threats. Some of the atrocities were carried out with impunity during associations causing victims to fear for their lives.

"Most of the perpetrators are believed to be members of the Muslim Boys gang who intensified their drive to recruit other prisoners to the fold.

"They force prisoners to accept the Muslim faith - those who refuse suffer assaults. They promise potential converts protection from other prisoners and staff who they challenge at every opportunity."

A source said: "These people are terrifying. Extreme Muslims are pulling together and the jail has experienced a surge in violence, drugs and intimidation.

"The Muslim Boys' gangmaster orders most of the assaults on fellow prisoners. They rule through fear and are very hard to infiltrate."

Security chiefs are most worried at the weekly seminars held by the gang in Belmarsh's multi-faith chapel.

Our source said: "Belmarsh has got a huge problem tackling the recruitment of terrorist cells.

"These people hold religious services every week. Around 125 Muslims attend and top members of al-Qaeda preach.

"None of the staff has a clue what they're talking about. Six officers attend each service, but all they can do is stand and watch.

"Those in the chapel could be planning a major terrorist attack but the officers wouldn't know.

"We can't even tape the service and get it translated because it is against Human Rights. It's frightening."

A former intelligence officer said last night: "This is extremely worrying. The degree of indoctrination in prison might be much higher and result in a recruit more dedicated to terrorism."

Category A Belmarsh, in South East London, holds Britain's most dangerous terror suspects.

They include the four men suspected of planning to bomb London and an inmate thought to be a "senior member of al-Qaeda in the UK".

The report details how one "prominent" inmate was seen becoming increasingly involved with Islam. It said: "He started attending Muslim services. In a phone conversation with his mother, he directed her to read some books that will convert her.

"He also associates with the Muslim Boys and took an active part in an assault on staff."

Two chiefs of the Muslim Boys were moved from the jail in December. Gangmaster 1 is now in Brixton. Gangmaster 2 is at Whitemoor jail, Cambs. He is serving life for murder.

The report discloses that officers fear they are losing control of Belmarsh which is awash with mobile phones and drugs. An astonishing 32 mobiles and 191 drugs were found at the jail between July and December.

Two prisoners with terror links were "perpetual" phone offenders.

Handsets are rented out with prisoners inserting their own Sim cards. A source at the jail said: "Officers are struggling to keep a lid on it."

The Brixton-based Muslim Boys are London's most feared gang.

They are said to carry out forced conversions at gunpoint and are thought to be behind at least two executions, violent robberies, attempted murders and drug deals.

The Prison Service said last night: "We don't comment on leaked documents. Each prison has an anti-bullying strategy. Prison governors also ensure any sign of radicalisation is vigorously challenged."

Sacramento, California (KP) - In a bid to submit their own doctored version of Indian history to the California Board of Education, two US based Hindu groups; the Vedic Foundation, and the Hindu Education Foundation (HEF) are in a battle with historians as to what will be noted as history in school textbooks.

The HEF was founded by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 2004. The RSS as the readers will note is an organization that has a grotesque history of blatant sectarian violence towards Christians, Muslims, Sikhs and other minorities. The Vedic Foundation is an organization that is attempting to simplify Hinduism by narrowing worship to that of their god Vishnu.

Although current textbooks contain some obvious errors such as stating that the Hindi language is written in Arabic script, the two groups are not focusing on these mistakes. Rather they are adding their own Hindu nationalistic ideas to suit their agenda.

Examples of this can be seen from an objection by the HEF to change a quotation in a textbook stating that Aryan rules had created a caste system in India that kept peoples separated according to their work. The HEF demanded that this idea be changed to "During Vedic times, people were divided into different social groups (varnas) based on their capacity to undertake a particular profession."

In another example, the HEF asked that a sentence which described the discrimination of women to be changed to “men had different duties (dharma) as well as rights than women."

However far surpassing anything else is the HEF’s attempts to change the truth of what history states is the origin of the Hindu religion. Both the HEF and Vedic foundation do not want history to state that the Hindu nation was founded by Aryan invaders. An attempt is being made by these two groups to portray the Hindu religion as being native to India. "Textbooks must mention that none of the [ancient] texts, nor any Indian tradition, has a recollection of any Aryan invasion or migration," states engineer and pro-Hindu activitst S. Kalyanaraman.

On the topic of whether Aryan invaders brought the roots of the Hindu religion with them or not, Micheal Witzel, a Harvard University Sanskrit scholar and Indologist along with comparative historian Steve Farmer concludes in the magazine Frontline that "unquestionably, all sides of Indian history must be repeatedly re-examined. But any massive revisions must arise from the discovery of new evidence, not from desires to boost national or sectarian pride at any cost."

On the other hand Meenakshi Jain who is a historian at Delhi University wrote a book on Indian history for high school students, which was accepted by the then ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) states that "Indic civilization has been a big victim of misrepresentation and belittling of our culture.” She also says that history is meant to be rewritten, depending on the perspective and needs of the present time.

"There is no such thing as an objective history so when we write a textbook, we should make students aware of the status of current research of leading scholars in the field. It should not shut out a love for motherland, a pride in your past. If you teach that your country is backward, that it has no redeeming features in our civilization, it can damage a young perspective" she adds.

Other shocking statements by these groups can be noted as well. Anu Mandavilli, an Indian doctoral candidate at the University of Southern California states that "some of the groups involved here are not qualified to write textbooks, they do not draw lines between myth and history.". Speaking in regards to the Vedic Foundation in Austin, Texas, she says, "On their website, they claim that Hindu civilization started 111.5 trillion years ago. That makes Hinduism billions of years older than the Big Bang." (The assertion has since been pulled from the site.) "It would be ridiculous if it weren't so dangerous" she adds.

“Hindu Education Foundation, an educational project of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, strives to replace these various misconceptions with a correct representation of India and Hinduism.” is the statement made on http://hssworld.org website.

Furthermore, according to sources S. Kalyanaraman, advisor to HEF and an ideologue of the Hindutva movement in the U.S. hold the view that “It is time to attack the 'secular'. It is a dirty word, a dirty system and should be used as a word of abuse against anyone who does not adhere to Sanatana Dharma…I think secularism should be deemed a negation of Dharma, anti-Dharma, a word of abuse and hence rejected altogether.”

Even upon the investigation of the HEF website (http://www.hindueducation.org/index .html), the website contains a resource link in which a website called http://www.atributetohinduism.com/. The website is described as “information about Hinduism and Hindu contributions.” Searching this website one can find statements such as “India may have had a superior civilization with possible contacts with extraterrestrial visitors, and the flying devices called 'Vimanas' described in ancient Indian texts may underline their possible connections with today's aerospace technology…” In addition statements such as “the mention of airplanes is found many times throughout Vedic literature.”

Furthermore, articles with titles such as “Ancient Writings tell of UFO visit in 4,000 B.C.” and “Did Man reach the moon Thousands of Years ago?” are just some of material to be found upon exploration of the aforementioned websites.

Even though the finalization of the school texts are expected to take place in the next few weeks, readers should take serious note of the suspicious agenda of the above mentioned malicious organizations and ponder upon their real agenda. The recent actions of the Vedic Foundation and HEF should set off alarms to all persons, as the character of these groups parent organizations are known, and the damage that they can do to society in general is known to be treacherous.

"The textbooks before were not very good, but at least they were more or less presentable. Now, it is completely incorrect” says Professor Michael Witzel of Hardvard University.

My story isn't that spectacular, but hear goes. I used to be in a wrong crowd and all my priorities were mixed up. My family is a bit messed, and although I have one of the best moms in the world, my dad is the total opposite of what a sikh should be like.

Well, I used to be in the wrong crowd from the beginning, for some reason i always found it easier to get along with those kind of people. and i went to a school which is known for its bad sangat. I used to do dumb stuff like skip dchool and go places and drink and stuff, and cut my hair,even though i knew it would break my mother's heart.

then when i was in grade ten, i got really deppressed and started thinking of suicide and stuff. I've heard from people that Sukhmani Sahib takes away deppression, and also read that Bhai Rama Singh Ji got into sikhi through Sukhmani Saib, so i started doing it a bit.

but i still wasn't interested in amrit shucking or anything, but we used to go to simran and the keertans becuase guru ji did kirpa on me by blessing me with sadh sangat of gur sikhs.

the day i took amrit, i just woke up and felt like wearing a keski that day. it was weird cuz the day before i had plucked my eyebrows. :) and then that night was the smaagam rainsbayee and I took amrit, with guru ji's kirpa. I had not even thought about taking amrit like the day before, it just happened.

A village council in Pakistan has decreed that five young women should be abducted, raped or killed for refusing to honour childhood "marriages".

The women, who are cousins, were married in absentia by a mullah in their Punjabi village to illiterate sons of their family's enemies in 1996, when they were aged from six to 13.

The marriages were part of a compensation agreement ordered by the village council and reached at gunpoint after the father of one of the girls shot dead a family rival.

The rival families have now called in their "debt", demanding the marriages to the village men are fulfilled.

The case is becoming a cause cÃ©lÃ¨bre in Pakistan, pitting tribal mores against a group of modern-minded, educated women. Amna Niazi, the eldest of the five at 22, is taking a degree in English literature, while both her sisters want to attend university.

Their fathers are supporting them and have refused to hand them over, leading to a resumption of the blood feud, with two relatives shot recently and 20 people arrested, while promises of further retribution and murder abound.

In addition to the sentence on the women, the village council has sentenced to death Jehan Khan Niazi, the father of three of the women, and the fathers of the other two for failing to honour the supposed bond with men whose identities they are not even certain of.

The women have said they will commit suicide if their fathers obey the council.

Speaking at their home in Sultanwala, a remote cotton and sugar-cane growing village, Amna said: "It is a great injustice that should be ended. Why should we pay for a crime committed by someone else? We will commit suicide if it happens. We would be treated like animals by them. Our misery would never end as this is just another way of using us as tools in the feud." None of the women has so far been able to marry as their childhood "marriages" hang over them.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan condemned the "barbaric custom of vani", - the tradition of handing over women to resolve disputes - and called on President Pervez Musharraf to enforce a ban.

Last year a three-year-old girl near Multan was betrothed to a 60-year-old man in a similar settlement. The case led to parliament passing a law banning vani and honour killings, but it has been widely ignored.

The case of Mukhtar Mai, a Pakistani woman whom a village council ordered to be gang-raped for an alleged offence committed by her brother, has also reached international attention.

The Daily Telegraph was granted access to the young women, despite Mr Niazi's fear that the village will further condemn him for being "un-Islamic" by allowing his daughters to be photographed, albeit with their faces covered by veils.

Amna, who hopes to become an English lecturer, said: "We are proud of our father. Despite having little money, he has educated us and shown us that we must stand up in society and demand our rights."

She is studying at a college affiliated to the university of Lahore, while her sister Abida, 18, is applying to study medicine, and Sajida, 15, is still at secondary school.

The other girls, Assia, 20, and Fatima, 16, are the daughters of Mr Niazi's brothers.

"Only a few of my friends know about this," said Abida. "But those that do support us and say we are fighting for the oppressed women of Pakistan."

Mr Niazi, who is a government accountant, was candid about the cause of the feud. "My brother murdered one of our neighbours after being shot at. But it is complicated, they had already insulted us by making indecent remarks to our girls," he said.

He added that his family had already paid blood-money to the aggrieved party. "I have refused to give into the council's request as it is un-Islamic. I cannot hand over my girls like goats to marry these illiterate boys," he said.

How Muslims Perceive Us

I had decided a while ago that I should write this e-mail, but other things always came first. Today i read something very shocking on an e-group, about bibian going out with muslim boys. What was most shocking was that people on the group just seemed to accept this. But can I ask why do we accept this?

In the last few years, I have become quite involved with some of these situations, not intentionally, but by accident. As some of you may know I now live in Leeds, which is right next to Bradford (Mini-Pakistan). Over the last year, when I went to some of the local Gurdwaras ( there are many), I would occasionally get distraught parents come up to me telling me to talk to their children. The reason they asked me, because I can speak english, british-born sikh, who attempts to practice. It started off with one girl who said she madly wants to marry a muslim boy, her parents will not agree, so they brought her to talk to me. Naturally I was a bit shocked, but I spoke to her at the gurdwara. She told me how much they loved each other, she was going to convert and they were going to marry. I asked her if he really did love her. She said yes. I said, "You are going to convert for him, out of love. I do not ask him to take Amrit, but will he, out of love for you, just come to the gurdwara, and just bow in front of Sahib Siri Guru Granth sahib ji. Surely if you can convert for him, he can do this much for you?"

To cut the story short, he would not. She stuck by him, two weeks later ran off with him. They were not seen for six weeks, until she came home, after he had dumped her for another girl. Two other cases came to me, different in structure, but similar storyline. Eventually, I thought enough is enough. I went on the gurdwara stage and spoke about muslims, panjabi girls, fundamental muslim groups, etc. Guru Maharaj de kirpa, the sangat responded, an ever-expanding youth group has been set-up, we did the shabad-Guru samagam,which included a youth camp,in which this subject was particularly discussed. Now the youth are getting ready to create mass education on Sikhi in this area, as this was seen as a starting point.

I KNOW THIS IS A LONG E-MAIL, BUT IMPORTANT. PLEASE READ ON.

Since the smamgam, because of the camp I have had another 4 cases. I know maharaj will help all those who need it. But I have noticed a pattern which i what I want to share. Every situation is different, different ages, environment, etc. But one fundamental pattern.

There are two types of muslim boys;
FUNDAMENTAL MUSLIM - these usually belong to particular groups. They do not care for the individuals, they look at who she is. They target sikh,hindu,christain and jewish girls. Romancing, flattery, games, etc, to get these in girls in their circle, leading towards conversion. Shocking as it may seem these boys truely believe if they convert a non-muslim into Islam, then they will be Mukt. (Liberated)
NON-RELIGIOUS MUSLIMS - they care little about religion, for them it is a social thing. If they go out with pakistani girls and get them pregnent, their community forces them to get married. They do not want to get married, but just go with girls. So they INTENTIONALLY pick sikh/hindu/white girls, because they can do what they want, there is no comeback. If the girls get pregnent, their community does not care, these are just cheap girls for their boys to use as they grow up. They are not pakistani muslim girls, who are pure. hence the pakistani community a major superiority complex over the others.

PUNJABI GIRLS - Notice i call them punjabi, because they have little knowledge on Sikhi, and no practice. The pattern I have found in the girls is what i call the "Bollywood Concept". These girls wholeheartedly believe love will conquer all. As in films, there is a social divide, their parents are against it, their community is against, but no matter love will always win. However these poor girls get a reality check, when the boy`s sisters, mother and other family do not want this "cheap" girl" in their family. Or the boy has had his fun and wants to move on to the next girl, or get maried to a respectable girl. Love suddenly disappears, and she is left humilliated in front of her friends, family and community FOR LIFE, because people do not forget.

I am not racist. I know punjabi boys are just as bad. But we as a community have got to look at how muslims percieve us. They do target punjabi girls, because they are considered easy. Many years ago, A hindu brahmin journalist wrote in a national newspaper, "The Daily Telegraph" that sikh girls are the most uninhibited, ie.(cheap), in the asian community. Fundamental muslim do target sikh girls, they are desparate for a dastaar wale girl just to humiliate sikhs. How are we as a community reacting. Why do we accept this? Why are our girls so niave that they think everything is so innocent. Why do they play games?

the muslim community here, has a major problem of pakistani girls running away with non-muslims, due to seeing the hypocrisy and attitudes of muslims boys. However the are trying to tackle the situation, hence have a £5million pound grant for a school for muslim girls.

We as sikhs look at Sarbat da bhalla (consideration for all mankind). But we also have realise not everyone else is like that. We as a community cannot tolerate our community to be precieved in this way. We are not cheap or asain trash. The sikh community should be the most moral, upstanding, hardworking, civilised and sophisticated society as created by our Guru`s. THAT IS OUR STANDARD.

A benti to everyone, have some self-respect! Especially to all the Bibian, do not let girls who are your friends behave like this. Say something. Educate them. It is not innocently going to the cinema with some boys, who happen to be muslims. The deeper they go the more they get burned.

I know alot of people may not like this e-mail, or will disagree with it. Some people may say there is not a problem. If you go to any college, uni, etc, you will see there is a problem. DO YOUR COMMUNITY A FAVOUR, DO NOT ACCEPT IT!!!!!

Sikh orphans given to Christian missionaries?

It has come to light Sikh children who where made orphanes in 1980's handed over to christian Missionaries by Government, etc. This would have ment they converted there faith and there fore another way found to get rid of the Sikh youth loosing there sikhi, sikhi loosing its next generation.

This was done in order to hide evidence of the Nov 1984 carnage.I have heard of
the recent film AMU but did not know that there was a well organized move of the
part of the so-called Sikh leaders to give Sikh orphans to Christian
missionaries.

If I recall correctly there were at least well over four hundered Sikh children
that were brought back from the Calcutta region alone to Punjab and resettled
among some various orphanages and some adopted by sikhs.

Some how these
children landed up with Mother Theresa.Credit goes to mother theresa that she
did counter argued when representations were made to her initially by Sr Mahip
Singh.I believe it was through some Calcutta resident Sikhs investigating the
carnage in Bengal state that this issue came to light.They visited mother
theresa, who confirmed many sikh children had arrived there.She also assured
Sikhs that until they were able to take care she will look after them.The Sikhs
offered her all the support to bring them as Sikhs and at once contatced the
Calcutta Sikh leaders at Gurduara Barri Sikh sangat.

The Calcutta Sikh
leaders along with Capt Bhag Singh ji, I beleive, through Dr Mahip Singh
informed Bhagat Puran Singh ji, who along with Mahip Singh ji at once offered
ardasa and left shortly after for Calcutta to bring the children back to punjab
and his care.Later some of these children were joined with their parents or
relatives who had survived and were located.But others remained at the
pingalwara, and among some other orphanages within Punjab.

It was very
clearly pointed out in the punjabi press and aslo some English media that it was
due to a conspiracy of some of the indian government agents that these Sikh
children were transported to a christian charity.In other words it was a
deliberate act to loose the community its youth.

But Khalsa Ji, the
saddest part is all our organisations are busy chassing phantoms, NOBOSDY ever
had the single iota of sense to say let us organise our own study into these
massacres -state by state, town by town,and street by street, and under a
category of other( eg those travelling on trains, buses , cars or etc) and
establish what exactly happened, who died where and how,who are the survivors
and how many children are involved and now accounted for.

Instead we
are busy chasing phantoms, argung over maryada, that has been set 50 years ago
and still wonder if we are sikhs or jats, tarkhaans or kummiars!

I am
ashamed some times to be a sikh , when i think back that we could have
abandonned countless other children because our Sikh leaders in the Punjab found
politics more appealing.

I am NOT ashamed to say, when I heard this
in 1984 december, I could not eat for days , and spent days liasing with
Christian organisations in UK to ensure the Sikh children were brought up as

THE TRUTH ABOUT CONVERSIONS 10 SECRETS THE MUSLIMS DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW

1. Islam is a totally MISSIONARY religion committed to making EVERYONE Muslim, according to the Koran the world is divided up into 2 parts, Dar-as-Islam (House of Faith) a title which applies to all Islamic countries and Dar-al-Harb (Household of War), land not yet surrendered to Allah, which is the rest of the world. 3. At the Hizb-ut-Tahrir ( HUT ) conference at the Wembley arena in August 1994, a Sikh was converted on stage in front of 8000 cheering and clapping Muslims. The Sikh girl then proceeded to attack Sikhism making particularly offensive statements against the Sikh Gurus. The audience laughed and continued to cheer. Some of this speech was televised on satellite T.V and on the HUTs pirate radio station. Muslim leaders at the conference called for an intensification of the campaign to bring Sikh and Hindu women to Islam. The same thing happened at HUTs Rally for Islam conference in Trafalgar Square, August 1995. This time 2 Hindu women were converted on stage in front of 2000 cheering Muslims. Again Muslim leaders demanded that Muslims boys try harder to convert Sikh and Hindu girls.

4. The self appointed Muslim parliament of Britain passed a resolution demanding that the British government make it illegal for Muslim women to marry non-Muslim. It also called for the banning of conversions of Muslims to other faiths. Any Muslim who did convert was to be stoned to death according Islamic tradition. Thankfully, the British government did not take their demand seriously, but the event showed the Muslims double standards and hypocrisy.

5. HUT leaders issued a directive in January 1995 to specially selected male members telling them to place Ads in personal columns of national newspapers inviting relationships from Asian women, they were told to write the religion and nationality of the girl were unimportant and be ambiguous about their own backgrounds by for example only describing themselves as Asian.

They were further told to form intimate relationships with only Sikh and Hindu girls who replied with the aim of conversion. The expense of the Ads and any dates were to be paid by the HUT.

7. A Muslim converting somebody, will never tell the person the whole story. For example when converting men they always leave out the part about having to be circumcised to become Muslim. After all what man would want half of his genitals cut off. Likewise girl converts are tricked into believing that men and women are equal to Islam.

8. HUT leadership has instructed its members to specifically target problem groups of conversion. These include young teenage girls, people with social problems, the recently bereaved and victims of abuse as children. These people are considered to be weak willed and easily manipulated once identified the Muslim will try to convince their target that Islam will magically solve all their problems. Incidentally in 1992 the hut produced an article telling Muslim men to particularly target non-Muslim girls with plain or unattractive physical, facial or body features. These girls the article said would not be accustomed to this attention and would do anything to maintain a relationship. It went on to say that the discomfort you may feel in such relationships, especially if intimate is only temporary however the rewards you will receive in Heaven will last for eternity.

9. The HUT has instructed Muslims to work in groups when converting, with one person forming a very close friendship with their target. The group then works to find out the strengths and weaknesses of the person involved and then will work accordingly. If for example, the person loves sport and is very athletic, they go on about how Islam actively encourages sport and how all the world’s best sportsmen such as Muhammad Ali, Tyson and Imran Khan are Muslims.

If the person has a strongly anti-white attitude, then they will stir up racial hatred against whites even more by talking about past white injustices against them.  THE DIFFERENT WAYS THE HUT ARE ATTACKING US Fanatics are now vandalising books on Sikhism and religious texts such as the Guru Granth Sahib in Council, School, and college libraries.

 About 30% of the time this vandalism involves the writing of false propaganda and messages to the readers of the book. These messages usually attempts to UNDERMINE your faith by MISQUOTING religious texts and distorting reality. Check your local library especially if you live in an area with a history of trouble.

 Recent events have shown that groups have become increasingly envious of our prosperity in this country. They are now systematically trying their best to damage us financially. In some Mosques speakers have told worshippers to boycott Sikh and Hindu shops. However, the most obvious example of this economic sabotage would be that of the Bradford riots. These were not as the media have us believe merely a case of Asian youths uprising and fighting white fascist police brutality, but more a situation where gangs went on rampage, burning and looting non-Muslim property.

The Economist Magazine (June 17th 1995 edition ) reported that No Hindu nor Sikh youths took part, only Muslim males. Indian owned business were attacked. In fact other reports state that older, masked Muslims ( thought to be HUT ) went down the streets ahead of everyone else, and specifically marked out Sikh and Hindu shops with spray paint, for destruction by rioters following them. Don’t be fooled by the Muslim media, Sikhs and Hindus were the victims of the Muslim riots in Bradford.

The HUT produced and circulated articles in universities, stating that Jewish, Sikh and Hindu students were dogs and must be removed from higher education. (As reported in the Guardian, 31st October 1995 edition). The Muslims have realised that the power, respect, money and knowledge and influence brings makes us more powerful enemies. The exact strategy for preventing us from obtaining higher education has not yet been leaked, but the harassment and bullying Hindu and Sikh students at schools and colleges (by such acts as the storming of West Thames college in Jan 1995) is bound to be a part of it. After all how can anyone work in places of such stress.

Our youths must strive to get highly educated as they possibly can. University students should act as role models and encourage younger members of the community to get an education. This will greatly benefit not only you and your family, but help your community.

Youths have been instructed to infiltrate any and every organisation and position of authority they can. They have also been told to keep their Islamic fundamentalist secret and subtly remove our community from a position within these organisations. For example, they have been directed to join Student Union bodies, the Media, anti-racist groups community groups, councils and political parties.

Muslims even use black magic to try and convert people. So don’t take anything object, food, gift from a muslim!

This poem portrays the lifestyle and thoughts of an impressionable young Sikh girl who has been deceived by the false charm of a Muslim boy. The following text is written as seen through her eyes.

Life in leafy Edgbaston was cosy, routine and without much bother,

Mummy and daddy where professional middle class,
I was at college study for my A levels,
I was shy and obedient but I wasn't content,
I longed for excitement,
I wanted to live the world,
I wanted to be as bold as brass and that was my intent.
At college one day, a lad approached me, as he towards me,

I could see from afar around his neck, he wore the moon and stars around his neck.
He was very persistent and sweet,
Told me I was beautiful from my head down to my feet.
In my innocence by this tender words I was fooled,
This Muslim boy loved me.
And the love for my own family cooled.

My stupidity lead me to follow western trends,
I allowed him to become my boyfriend,
He had me under his hypnotic spell,
What I was going to do next nobody could tell,
I moved from Edgbaston to Sparkbrook.
I longed to be with my one and only Farooq.
My life was to change completely,
Long gone where the afternoon tea parties with the ladies,
Long gone where my Mummy's BMW and Daddy's Mercedes,

I was soon getting on and off buses and trams,
As I struggled with a variety of prams,
I was his sweetheart no more,
Instead I had become his common whore.

"The Satanic Verses" - Satan tempts Muhammad

Salman Rushdie's publication of "The Satanic Verses" was one of the biggest Islam-related headlines of the last two decades. But the mass outpouring of anti-Rushdie sentiment that took place was remarkable in that it completely overlooked the most important fact of Rushdie's book; namely, that the tale of the "Satanic verses" (ie. Qur'anic verses which temporarily accepted some of the pagan goddesses of Mecca, but which were later denied as having been inspired by Satan), was completely based on the work of al-Tabari, a Muslim biographer of the Prophet. Analysis of the historical account of al-Tabari makes possible a fuller understanding of both Satan and prophecy in Islam.

Firstly, we should look at the historical account itself, narrated by the famous Muslim historian, al-Tabari:

When the Messenger of God saw how his tribe turned their backs on him and was
grieved to see them shunning the message he had brought to them from God, he
longed in his soul that something would come to him from God which would
reconcile him with his tribe. With his love for his tribe and his eagerness for
their welfare it would have delighted him if some of the difficulties which they
made for him could have been smoothed out, and he debated with himself and
fervently desired such an outcome. Then God revealed: "By the Star when it
sets...", and when he came to the words: "Have you considered El-Lat and
El-'Uzza and Manat the third, the other?", Satan cast onto his tongue, because
of his inner debates, and what he desired to bring to his people, the words,
"Those are the high-flying cranes; verily their intercession is accepted with
approval"... Then Gabriel came to the Messenger of God and said, "Muhammad, what
have you done? You have recited to the people that which I did not bring you
from God, and you have said that which was not said to you." Then the Messenger
of God was much greived and feared God greatly, but God sent down a revelation
to him (Qur'an 22:52), for He was merciful to him... (The History of al-Tabari,
translated by W. M. Watt and M. V. McDonald, vol. 6, page 108, 109)

The accuracy of this account is difficult to judge from historical accounts alone. The earliest biography of the Prophet was that of Ibn Ishaq, but it has not survived as an independent manuscript. However, two of the main biographies of the Prophet which do survive, those of Ibn Hisham and al-Tabari, both claim to be based upon copies of Ibn Ishaq's work which the authors had in their posesssion. But while al-Tabari's biography includes the above "Satanic verses" episode, Ibn Hisham's does not. Western scholars have all sided with al-Tabari, believing that it would have been impossible for him to insert such a controversial episode had it not been commonly accepted knowledge at the time; Muslims have sided with Ibn Hisham and denied the whole event, with the notable exception of the famous Pakistani scholar, Fazlur Rahman, whose views will be considered shortly. Now let us look at the verses which al-Tabari cites as having replaced the "Satanic verses":

Have you considered El-Lat and El-'Uzza and Manat the third, the other?... They
are naught but names yourselves have named, and your fathers; God has sent down
no authority touching them... How many an angel is there in the heavens whose
intercession avails not anything, save after that God gives leave to whomsoever
He wills, and is well-pleased. Those who do not believe in the world to come
name the angels with the names of females. (Qur'an 53:20-29)

So there is no trace left in the Qur'an of any compromise on the three Meccan goddesses. The real issue of this incident is that the Prophet gave in to temptation and altered the original verses himself to arrive at a version acceptable to the Meccans. The episode is fundamentally about the Prophet's moral failure, and Satan enters the picture only later, by way of a Qur'anic revelation which seems to be tailored to address the "Satanic verses" episode, and which thus provides more evidence for the truth of Tabari's account:

We sent not ever any Messenger or Prophet before thee, but that Satan cast into
his fancy, when he was fancying; but God annuls what Satan casts, then God
confirms His signs - surely, God is All-knowing, All-wise - that He may make
what Satan casts a trial for those in whose hearts is sickness... (Qur'an
22:52)

The Qur'an provides even more evidence to back up al-Tabari's narrative if we consider that verses dealing with "abrogation" of verses by others may in fact be dealing with the "Satanic verses" episode.

And for whatever verse We abrogate or cast into oblivion, We bring a better
or the like of it; knowest thou not that God is powerful over everything?
(Qur'an 2:100)

An interesting thing about al-Tabari's account is his assertion that Satan cast the false verses into the Prophet's mind "because of his inner debates". Such an interpretation of the event is in agreement with an understanding of Satan as a personification of tendencies to sinfulness. The Qur'an provides a further justification for a psychological rather than literal interpretation of Satan by identifying him as a "jinn":

And when We said to the angels, 'Bow yourselves to Adam'; so they bowed
themselves, save Iblis; he was one of the jinn, and committed ungodliness
against his Lord's command. (Qur'an 18:50).

"Jinn" is in fact a pre-Islamic word for an unseen being which can speak to people and even make them irrational (hence the Arabic word for madness is majnoon, literally "acted upon by jinn"). Satan/Iblis is then the irrational urge which arose out of the Prophet's human weakness and his desperation to compromise with the Meccans, and drove him to insert the "Satanic verses" into the revelation. One of the most eminent of Muslim scholars of the 20th century, Fazlur Rahman, found no difficulty in accepting the truth of the "Satanic verses" incident in the light of the Qur'an's repeated assertion that Messengers were only human, and hence fallible.

But whatever fears or thoughts - or even gestures - of compromise the Prophet might make, they were soon "abrogated" or "erased" by God, as verse 22:52 makes clear. The well-known story that after mentioning the pagan goddesses once (53:19-20), the Prophet described them as "exalted swans whose intercession [with God] is to be hoped for"... only to abrogate these words in 53:21-23, is perfectly intelligible, for this incident occurred at a time of great trial and persecution of his followers, whom he had ordered to emigrate temporarily to Abyssinia. There are other indications that certain verses were replaced by others: 2:106, 13:39, 16:101... For the Qur'an, it is neither strange nor out of tune nor blameworthy for a prophet that he is not always consistent as a human. It is nevertheless as a human that he becomes an example for mankind, for his average level of conduct is still so high that is is a worthy model for mankind... there is abundant evidence in the Qur'an that while the Prophet did at times wish that developments would take a certain turn, God's Revelation went a different way: "Do not move your tongue with [ie., ahead of] the Revelation, hastily anticipating it. It is upon Us to bring it together and to recite it - so that when We recite it, let you follow its recitation." (75:16-19) (Fazlur Rahman, Major Themes in the Qur'an, pages 88-90).

Why have conservative Muslims largely refused to discuss al-Tabari's account of the "Satanic verses"? The simple reason seems to be that it presents a messy picture of the Prophet as fallible, and a Qur'an capable of being temporarily distorted by his human inclinations to win over his tribe. More importantly, the immense body of Islamic Law is based upon the reports (Hadith) of the Prophet's life and teachings. However, if even the Qur'an, which is held to be pure divine revelation, was subject to the fallibility of the Prophet, then the Hadith are even more so, since they are explicitly his words and not God's. The Qur'anic verses regarding abrogation can in fact be seen as a divine guarantee of the revelation; in spite of the fallibility of the prophet, God ensures the correctness of the Qur'an by replacing incorrect verses. However, there is no such guarantee of abrogation for the Hadith. Conservatives find such questioning of the Hadith and Islamic Law to be unacceptable.

So why all the fuss about Rushdie's book? Would al-Tabari himself be eligible for a death sentence if he were alive today, even though in his own time the question never arose? The answer possibly has less to do with al-Tabari and more to do with the injured pride of Ayatollah Khomeini, who proclaimed the death sentence upon Rushdie. Unfortunately, Rushdie's book was banned in most Muslim countries, so most Muslims never got a chance to read his vicious satire of Khomeini as a mullah who literally rides to power seated on the back of the angel Gabriel. If in fact it was simply Khomeini's annoyance at Rushdie's parody that brought on the death sentence, Muslims around the world have been pawns in an unfortunate contest of egos.

The QUR'AN

The Muslim community itself has, of course, an explanation for why the Qur’an looks the way it does, but the contradictory nature of the accounts within the multiplicity of version of the story has raised grave doubts on the part of many scholars as to their motivation.

Generally, Muhammad himself is excluded from any role in the collection of the text, although it is possible to find some accounts which talk of him going over the whole text with Ali, his cousin, son-in-law and figurehead of the later Shi’a. Zayd ibn Thabit, a companion of Muhammad, is generally credited with an early collection of the scripture and the pages of the text are said to have been entrusted to Hafsa, one of Muhammad’s wives. Under the instructions of ‘Uthman, the third ruler (Caliph) of the Muslim empire after the death of Muhammad, the major collection of the text “as we now have it” (as the Muslim claims have it) is said to have taken place.

Working on the basis of pieces of text written “on palm leaves or flat stones or in the hearts of men,” the complete text (deemed to have survived in full) was written out in full and distributed to the major centres of the Muslim empire.

Thus, within 30 years of the death of Muhammad, it is understood that the Qur’an existed in its fixed, if skeleton form; theologically, it is held that the form that the text was in at this point was an image of the “heavenly tablet,” suggesting that its structure and content were precisely that which God desired. From this skeleton text, which indicated only the consonants of the Arabic script in a rudimentary form, the final text of the Qur’an was developed over the next two centuries, such that all the subtleties of the language and the script were indicated. Most important from the Muslim perspective, it is held that an oral tradition preserved the full text from the time of revelation, the written form serving only as a mnemonic device for memorisation of the text. There are in a sense, two ways of dealing with the Qur’an within Muslim tradition: the oral, the tradition about which stems from Muhammad, and the written, the tradition stemming from the caliph ‘Uthman.

Bibi Deep Kaur

A contingent of Turkish soldiers is on active patrol. The area rulers have specifically assigned this contingent to keep a watch over the Sikh jatha that had gathered in Majha and would surely proceed to Anandpur Sahib for participating Dashmesh father's (Guru Gobind Singh) Dharam Yudh. Additional responsibilities assigned to this contingent included, instilling fear among people who either express sympathy with the Sikh jatha or welcome it or serve it any way. For this reason, the Turkish contingent always moved ahead of the Sikh Jatha.

Three miles from the road leading to Anandpur Sahib in Hoshiarpur District, is a village, named Talban. Bibi Deep Kaur, the subject of our story, was resident of this village. There was only one Sikh house in this village -- Bibi Deep Kaur's residence. Today her husband wasn't home. He had already left for participating in Dashmesh father's Dharam Yudh. When Bibi heard of Jatha's arrival. She was filled with emotions of self-service. She explained her emotions and desire to other women in her neighbourhood. But the Turkish soldiers had successfully frightened the residence of this village. Thus no one was willing to accompany her.

"Let them not proceed, if someone doesn't want to" Deep Kaur told herself. For how could one stay behind if they have even the slightest love for the Guru in their heart. Holding onto the quest of love and a glimpse of the Sikh Jatha, Deep Kaur proceeded alone and awaited the arrival of Sant-Sipahis.

Suddenly dust arose from afar. Her face brightened with joy. Her quest for Jatha's sight grew stronger. Now she started walking on the road toward the rising dust storm. Soon she realised that this was not the Jatha of Sant- Sipahis. Rather it was the contingent of evil Turkish soldiers. Surprised, she quickly moved off the road and tried to hide herself by sitting next to a tree.

As the Turkish contingent got closer, it's commander caught sight of Deep Kaur. Seeing the youthful beauty, he lost all self-control.

He commandingly asked. "Who are you?"

"Whoever I am. How does it matter to you?" She answered fearlessly.

Commander's attraction grew stronger with her challenge.

He remarked softly, "By Shehansha's (ruler's) orders, I have been deputed to keep a watch on Sikhs in this area. Since the Sikh Jatha is heading this way, I need to ascertain whether you are a Sikh."

"If I were to be a Sikh, then?"

"Then we will have to arrest and sent you to Lahore." Deep Kaur heard his response.

But, being a Sikh how could she lie. Fearlessly, she announced, "I am Sikh."

The Turk Commander was astonished by her fearlessness. But as captive of her beauty, by now, he was aroused beyond any self-control. He spoke softly and said, "Beautiful, I am responsible for capturing Sikhs. You are a Sikh. I should arrest you, but I cannot do that. I cannot fulfil my responsibilities. For I have a heart that worships beauty and it is yours now. I am your captive."

Deep Kaur's face reddened with anger. She lashed out saying, "You should be ashamed of yourself talking to me like this."

"What is there to be ashamed of where hearts have met? I am yours. Accept me and I shall keep you as my Begum (wife)." He said.

"I am a Sikh and married. If you ever uttered anything like this again I will snatch your tongue." Deep Kaur responded. By now she was shaking with anger.

"What kind of a beauty it would be that doesn't exhibit enticing or alluring behaviour. I am impressed by your behaviour. Now don't delay anymore and let's go. What are you going to get from these wild Sikhs." Saying this the commander dismounted from his horse and moved towards Deep Kaur while his contingent waited on the opposite side of the road.

As he dismounted, Deep Kaur stood up. Seeing him approach her, she challengingly said "Beware, if you touch my body I will not spare you."

Insane under arousal, the commander ignored her warning and instead proceeded to hug her. Deep Kaur pulled back with lightening speed. By now she had the small kirpan in her hand. As the commander approached, struck him in his stomach with the kirpan. A blood spring burst opened. With painful cries, he simply dropped to the ground.

By now Deshmesh's daughter had jumped into the war. As the wounded Commander sat on the ground, she viciously attacked him once again, sending his evil soul to burn in hell. Before, the Turkish soldiers could advance, she moved swiftly to take control of the commander's sword and was well-prepared for self-defense. Seeing their dying commander, the soldiers advanced shaking in anger and simultaneously attacked her.

However, the Deshmesh's daughter wasn't scared being out-numbered. Like a lioness, she stood fast for the challenge. She used the sword like a man and soon two soldiers fell to the ground while several others were severely wounded. Deep Kaur too sustained deep wounds on her face and neck. Although her wounds were profusely bleeding, she kept her courage and continued fighting like a man. Today, Turkish soldiers were challenged by a woman.

Far on the road, the sound of horses could be heard once again. This time the Sant-Sipahi's Jatha was approaching. As the Turkish soldiers saw the Sikh Jatha, they got scared, immediately mounted their horses and ran for their lives. The bodies of the Commander and five of his associates were left behind, lying cold on the ground.

The sight of approaching Sikh brothers filled Deep Kaur filled with joy. She quickly tried to move towards the road but couldn't. She had lost too much blood and thus was unable to walk. She simply fell unconscious to the ground. Sikh Jatha saw unconscious Deep Kaur and 6 dead bodies of Turkish soldier, upon reaching the location. It did not take them long to comprehend the situation.

Immediately, they spread a bed for Dashmesh's daughter, dressed her wounds and awaken her with medication. Then carrying her along, the Jatha proceeded to Anandpur Sahib for participating in the Dashmesh father's Dharam Yudh.

Fully aware of the situation, our Dashmesh father Guru Gobind Singh Ji was strolling outside his court awaiting the arrival of this Jatha. Seeing them arrive, he joyfully advanced to receive them and asked "Where is my daughter?"

Jatha members were confused. They did not understand the meaning of this question, since there were many Sikh women among the Jatha. Who did Guru Sahib honor with daughter's address? They could not understand.

In the meantime, Guru Sahib quickly moved towards the palki (palanquin) carrying the wounded Deep Kaur. Raising the palki curtain, he hugged and kissed her forehead, saying "This is my daughter Deep Kaur. Because of such daughter my Panth shall remain in Chardi Kala

ONE UNIVERSAL CREATOR GOD. BY THE GRACE OF THE TRUE GURU:

The Siddhas formed an assembly; sitting in their Yogic postures, they shouted, "Salute this gathering of Saints." I offer my salutation to the One who is true, infinite and incomparably beautiful. I cut off my head, and offer it to Him; I dedicate my body and mind to Him. O Nanak, meeting with the Saints, Truth is obtained, and one is spontaneously blessed with distinction. 1
What is the use of wandering around? Purity comes only through Truth. Without the True Word of the Shabad, no one finds liberation. 1 Pause
"Who are you? What is your name? What is your way? What is your goal? We pray that you will answer us truthfully; we are a sacrifice to the humble Saints. Where is your seat? Where do you live, boy? Where did you come from, and where are you going? Tell us, Nanak - the detached Siddhas wait to hear your reply. What is your path?"
2 He dwells deep within the nucleus of each and every heart. This is my seat and my home. I walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru. I came from the Celestial Lord God; I go wherever He orders me to go. I am Nanak, forever under the Command of His Will. I sit in the posture of the eternal, imperishable Lord. These are the Teachings I have received from the Guru. As Gurmukh, I have come to understand and realize myself; I merge in the Truest of the True. 3
"The world-ocean is treacherous and impassable; how can one cross over? Charpat the Yogi says, O Nanak, think it over, and give us your true reply." What answer can I give to someone, who claims to understand himself? I speak the Truth; if you have already crossed over, how can I argue with you? 4
The lotus flower floats untouched upon the surface of the water, and the duck swims through the stream; with one's consciousness focused on the Word of the Shabad, one crosses over the terrifying world-ocean. O Nanak, chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord. One who lives alone, as a hermit, enshrining the One Lord in his mind, remaining unaffected by hope in the midst of hope, sees and inspires others to see the inaccessible, unfathomable Lord. Nanak is his slave. 5
"Listen, Lord, to our prayer. We seek your true opinion. Don't be angry with us - please tell us: How can we find the Guru's Door?" This fickle mind sits in its true home, O Nanak, through the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. The Creator Himself unites us in Union, and inspires us to love the Truth. 6
"Away from stores and highways, we live in the woods, among plants and trees. For food, we take fruits and roots. This is the spiritual wisdom spoken by the renunciates. We bathe at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, and obtain the fruits of peace; not even an iota of filth sticks to us. Luhaareepaa, the disciple of Gorakh says, this is the Way of Yoga." 7
In the stores and on the road, do not sleep; do not let your consciousness covet anyone else's home. Without the Name, the mind has no firm support; O Nanak, this hunger never departs. The Guru has revealed the stores and the city within the home of my own heart, where I intuitively carry on the true trade. Sleep little, and eat little; O Nanak, this is the essence of wisdom. 8
"Wear the robes of the sect of Yogis who follow Gorakh; put on the ear-rings, begging wallet and patched coat. Among the twelve schools of Yoga, ours is the highest; among the six schools of philosophy, ours is the best path. This is the way to instruct the mind, so you will never suffer beatings again." Nanak speaks: the Gurmukh understands; this is the way that Yoga is attained. 9
Let constant absorption in the Word of the Shabad deep within be your ear-rings; eradicate egotism and attachment. Discard sexual desire, anger and egotism, and through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, attain true understanding. For your patched coat and begging bowl, see
the Lord God pervading and permeating everywhere; O Nanak, the One Lord will carry you across. True is our Lord and Master, and True is His Name. Analyze it, and you shall find the Word of the Guru to be True. 10
Let your mind turn away in detachment from the world, and let this be your begging bowl. Let the lessons of the five elements be your cap. Let the body be your meditation mat, and the mind your loin cloth. Let truth, contentment and self-discipline be your companions. O Nanak, the Gurmukh dwells on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. 11
"Who is hidden? Who is liberated? Who is united, inwardly and outwardly? Who comes, and who goes? Who is permeating and pervading the three worlds?" 12
He is hidden within each and every heart. The Gurmukh is liberated. Through the Word of the Shabad, one is united, inwardly and outwardly. The self-willed manmukh perishes, and comes and goes. O Nanak, the Gurmukh merges in Truth. 13
"How is one placed in bondage, and consumed by the serpent of Maya? How does one lose, and how does one gain? How does one become immaculate and pure? How is the darkness of ignorance removed? One who understands this essence of reality is our Guru." 14
Man is bound by evil-mindedness, and consumed by Maya, the serpent. The self-willed manmukh loses, and the Gurmukh gains. Meeting the True Guru, darkness is dispelled. O Nanak, eradicating egotism, one merges in the Lord. 15
Focused deep within, in perfect absorption, the soul-swan does not fly away, and the body-wall does not collapse. Then, one knows that his true home is in the cave of intuitive poise. O Nanak, the True Lord loves those who are truthful. 16
"Why have you left your house and become a wandering Udaasee? Why have you adopted these religious robes? What merchandise do you trade? How will you carry others across with you?" 17
I became a wandering Udaasee, searching for the Gurmukhs. I have adopted these robes seeking the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan. I trade in the merchandise of Truth. O Nanak, as Gurmukh, I carry others across. 18
"How have you changed the course of your life? With what have you linked your mind? How have you subdued your hopes and desires? How have you found the Light deep within your nucleus? Without teeth, how can you eat iron? Give us your true opinion, Nanak." 19
Born into the House of the True Guru, my wandering in reincarnation ended. My mind is attached and attuned to the unstruck sound current. Through the Word of the Shabad, my hopes and desires have been burnt away. As Gurmukh, I found the Light deep within the nucleus of my self. Eradicating the three qualities, one eats iron. O Nanak, the Emancipator emancipates. 20
"What can you tell us about the beginning? In what home did the absolute dwell then? What are the ear-rings of spiritual wisdom? Who dwells in each and every heart? How can one avoid the attack of death? How can one enter the home of fearlessness? How can one know the posture of intuition and contentment, and overcome one's adversaries?" Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, egotism and corruption are conquered, and then one comes to dwell in the home of the self within. One who realizes the Shabad of the One who created the creation - Nanak is his slave. 21
"Where did we come from? Where are we going? Where will we be absorbed? One who reveals the meaning of this Shabad is the Guru, who has no greed at all. How can one find the essence of the unmanifest reality? How does one become Gurmukh, and enshrine love for the Lord? He Himself is consciousness, He Himself is the Creator; share with us, Nanak, your wisdom." By His Command we come, and by His Command we go; by His Command, we merge in absorption. Through the Perfect Guru, live the Truth; through the Word of the Shabad, the state of dignity is attained. 22
We can only express a sense of wonder about the beginning. The
absolute abided endlessly deep within Himself then. Consider freedom from desire to be the ear-rings of the Guru's spiritual wisdom. The True Lord, the Soul of all, dwells within each and every heart. Through the Guru's Word, one merges in the absolute, and intuitively receives the immaculate essence. O Nanak, that Sikh who seeks and finds the Way does not serve any other. Wonderful and amazing is His Command; He alone realizes His Command and knows the true way of life of His creatures. One who eradicates his self-conceit becomes free of desire; he alone is a Yogi, who enshrines the True Lord deep within. 23
From His state of absolute existence, He assumed the immaculate form; from formless, He assumed the supreme form. By pleasing the True Guru, the supreme status is obtained, and one is absorbed in the True Word of the Shabad. He knows the True Lord as the One and only; he sends his egotism and duality far away. He alone is a Yogi, who realizes the Word of the Guru's Shabad; the lotus of the heart blossoms forth within. If one remains dead while yet alive, then he understands everything; he knows the Lord deep within himself, who is kind and compassionate to all. O Nanak, he is blessed with glorious greatness; he realizes himself in all beings. 24
We emerge from Truth, and merge into Truth again. The pure being merges into the One True Lord. The false come, and find no place of rest; in duality, they come and go. This coming and going in reincarnation is ended through the Word of the Guru's Shabad; the Lord Himself analyzes and grants His forgiveness. One who suffers from the disease of duality, forgets the Naam, the source of nectar. He alone understands, whom the Lord inspires to understand. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, one is liberated. O Nanak, the Emancipator emancipates one who drives out egotism and duality. 25
The self-willed manmukhs are deluded, under the shadow of death. They look into the homes of others, and lose. The manmukhs are confused by doubt, wandering in the wilderness. Having lost their way, they are plundered; they chant their mantras at cremation grounds. They do not think of the Shabad; instead, they utter obscenities. O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Truth know peace. 26
The Gurmukh lives in the Fear of God, the True Lord. Through the Word of the Guru's Bani, the Gurmukh refines the unrefined. The Gurmukh sings the immaculate, Glorious Praises of the Lord. The Gurmukh attains the supreme, sanctified status. The Gurmukh meditates on the Lord with every hair of his body. O Nanak, the Gurmukh merges in Truth. 27
The Gurmukh is pleasing to the True Guru; this is contemplation on the Vedas. Pleasing the True Guru, the Gurmukh is carried across. Pleasing the True Guru, the Gurmukh receives the spiritual wisdom of the Shabad. Pleasing the True Guru, the Gurmukh comes to know the path within. The Gurmukh attains the unseen and infinite Lord. O Nanak, the Gurmukh finds the door of liberation. 28
The Gurmukh speaks the unspoken wisdom. In the midst of his family, the Gurmukh lives a spiritual life. The Gurmukh lovingly meditates deep within. The Gurmukh obtains the Shabad, and righteous conduct. He knows the mystery of the Shabad, and inspires others to know it. O Nanak, burning away his ego, he merges in the Lord. 29
The True Lord fashioned the earth for the sake of the Gurmukhs. There, he set in motion the play of creation and destruction. One who is filled with the Word of the Guru's Shabad enshrines love for the Lord. Attuned to the Truth, he goes to his home with honor. Without the True Word of the Shabad, no one receives honor. O Nanak, without the Name, how can one be absorbed in Truth? 30
The Gurmukh obtains the eight miraculous spiritual powers, and all wisdom. The Gurmukh crosses over the terrifying world-ocean, and obtains true understanding. The Gurmukh knows the ways of truth and untruth. The Gurmukh knows worldliness and renunciation. The
Gurmukh crosses over, and carries others across as well. O Nanak, the Gurmukh is emancipated through the Shabad. 31
Attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, egotism is dispelled. Attuned to the Naam, they remain absorbed in the True Lord. Attuned to the Naam, they contemplate the Way of Yoga. Attuned to the Naam, they find the door of liberation. Attuned to the Naam, they understand the three worlds. O Nanak, attuned to the Naam, eternal peace is found. 32
Attuned to the Naam, they attain Sidh Gosht - conversation with the Siddhas. Attuned to the Naam, they practice intense meditation forever. Attuned to the Naam, they live the true and excellent lifestyle. Attuned to the Naam, they contemplate the Lord's virtues and spiritual wisdom. Without the Name, all that is spoken is useless. O Nanak, attuned to the Naam, their victory is celebrated. 33
Through the Perfect Guru, one obtains the Naam, the Name of the Lord. The Way of Yoga is to remain absorbed in Truth. The Yogis wander in the twelve schools of Yoga; the Sannyaasis in six and four. One who remains dead while yet alive, through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, finds the door of liberation. Without the Shabad, all are attached to duality. Contemplate this in your heart, and see. O Nanak, blessed and very fortunate are those who keep the True Lord enshrined in their hearts. 34
The Gurmukh obtains the jewel, lovingly focused on the Lord. The Gurmukh intuitively recognizes the value of this jewel. The Gurmukh practices Truth in action. The mind of the Gurmukh is pleased with the True Lord. The Gurmukh sees the unseen, when it pleases the Lord. O Nanak, the Gurmukh does not have to endure punishment. 35
The Gurmukh is blessed with the Name, charity and purification. The Gurmukh centers his meditation on the celestial Lord. The Gurmukh obtains honor in the Court of the Lord. The Gurmukh obtains the Supreme Lord, the Destroyer of fear. The Gurmukh does good deeds, an inspires others to do so. O Nanak, the Gurmukh unites in the Lord's Union. 36
The Gurmukh understands the Simritees, the Shaastras and the Vedas. The Gurmukh knows the secrets of each and every heart. The Gurmukh eliminates hate and envy. The Gurmukh erases all accounting. The Gurmukh is imbued with love for the Lord's Name. O Nanak, the Gurmukh realizes his Lord and Master. 37
Without the Guru, one wanders, coming and going in reincarnation. Without the Guru, one's work is useless. Without the Guru, the mind is totally unsteady. Without the Guru, one is unsatisfied, and eats poison. Without the Guru, one is stung by the poisonous snake of Maya, and dies. O Nanak without the Guru, all is lost. 38
One who meets the Guru is carried across. His sins are erased, and he is emancipated through virtue. The supreme peace of liberation is attained, contemplating the Word of the Guru's Shabad. The Gurmukh is never defeated. In the store of the body, this mind is the merchant; O Nanak, it deals intuitively in Truth. 39
The Gurmukh is the bridge, built by the Architect of Destiny. The demons of passion which plundered Sri Lanka - the body - have been conquered. Ram Chand - the mind - has slaughtered Raawan - pride; the Gurmukh understands the secret revealed by Babheekhan. The Gurmukh carries even stones across the ocean. The Gurmukh saves millions of people. 40
The comings and goings in reincarnation are ended for the Gurmukh. The Gurmukh is honored in the Court of the Lord. The Gurmukh distinguishes the true from the false. The Gurmukh focuses his meditation on the celestial Lord. In the Court of the Lord, the Gurmukh is absorbed in His Praises. O Nanak, the Gurmukh is not bound by bonds. 41
The Gurmukh obtains the Name of the Immaculate Lord. Through the Shabad, the Gurmukh burns away his ego. The Gurmukh sings the Glorious Praises of the True Lord. The Gurmukh remains absorbed in the True Lord. Through the True
Name, the Gurmukh is honored and exalted. O Nanak, the Gurmukh understands all the worlds. 42
"What is the root, the source of all? What teachings hold for these times? Who is your guru? Whose disciple are you? What is that speech, by which you remain unattached? Listen to what we say, O Nanak, you little boy. Give us your opinion on what we have said. How can the Shabad carry us across the terrifying world-ocean?" 43

From the air came the beginning. This is the age of the True Guru's Teachings. The Shabad is the Guru, upon whom I lovingly focus my consciousness; I am the chaylaa, the disciple. Speaking the Unspoken Speech, I remain unattached. O Nanak, throughout the ages, the Lord of the World is my Guru. I contemplate the sermon of the Shabad, the Word of the One God. The Gurmukh puts out the fire of egotism. 44
"With teeth of wax, how can one chew iron? What is that food, which takes away pride? How can one live in the palace, the home of snow, wearing robes of fire? Where is that cave, within which one may remain unshaken? Who should we know to be pervading here and there? What is that meditation, which leads the mind to be absorbed in itself?" 45
Eradicating egotism and individualism from within, and erasing duality, the mortal becomes one with God. The world is difficult for the foolish, self-willed manmukh; practicing the Shabad, one chews iron. Know the One Lord, inside and out. O Nanak, the fire is quenched, through the Pleasure of the True Guru's Will. 46
Imbued with the True Fear of God, pride is taken away; realize that He is One, and contemplate the Shabad. With the True Shabad abiding deep within the heart, the body and mind are cooled and soothed, and colored with the Lord's Love. The fire of sexual desire, anger and corruption is quenched. O Nanak, the Beloved bestows His Glance of Grace. 47
"The moon of the mind is cool and dark; how is it enlightened? How does the sun blaze so brilliantly? How can the constant watchful gaze of Death be turned away? By what understanding is the honor of the Gurmukh preserved? Who is the warrior, who conquers Death? Give us your thoughtful reply, O Nanak." 48
Giving voice to the Shabad, the moon of the mind is illuminated with infinity. When the sun dwells in the house of the moon, the darkness is dispelled. Pleasure and pain are just the same, when one takes the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. He Himself saves, and carries us across. With faith in the Guru, the mind merges in Truth, and then, prays Nanak, one is not consumed by Death. 49
The essence of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is known to be the most exalted and excellent of all. Without the Name, one is afflicted by pain and death. When one's essence merges into the essence, the mind is satisfied and fulfilled. Duality is gone, and one enters into the home of the One Lord. The breath blows across the sky of the Tenth Gate and vibrates. O Nanak, the mortal then intuitively meets the eternal, unchanging Lord. 50
The absolute Lord is deep within; the absolute Lord is outside us as well. The absolute Lord totally fills the three worlds. One who knows the Lord in the fourth state, is not subject to virtue or vice. One who knows the mystery of God the Absolute, who pervades each and every heart, knows the Primal Being, the Immaculate Divine Lord. That humble being who is imbued with the Immaculate Naam, O Nanak, is himself the Primal Lord, the Architect of Destiny. 51
"Everyone speaks of the Absolute Lord, the unmanifest void. How can one find this absolute void? Who are they, who are attuned to this absolute void?" They are like the Lord, from whom they originated. They are not born, they do not die; they do not come and go. O Nanak, the Gurmukhs instruct their minds. 52
By practicing control over the nine gates, one attains perfect control over the Tenth Gate. There, the unstruck sound current of the
absolute Lord vibrates and resounds. Behold the True Lord ever-present, and merge with Him. The True Lord is pervading and permeating each and every heart.
The hidden Bani of the Word is revealed. O Nanak, the True Lord is revealed and known. 53
Meeting with the Lord through intuition and love, peace is found. The Gurmukh remains awake and aware; he does not fall sleep. He enshrines the unlimited, absolute Shabad deep within. Chanting the Shabad, he is liberated, and saves others as well. Those who practice the Guru's Teachings are attuned to the Truth. O Nanak, those who eradicate their self-conceit meet with the Lord; they do not remain separated by doubt. 54
"Where is that place, where evil thoughts are destroyed? The mortal does not understand the essence of reality; why must he suffer in pain?" No one can save one who is tied up at Death's door. Without the Shabad, no one has any credit or honor. "How can one obtain understanding and cross over?" O Nanak, the foolish self-willed manmukh does not understand. 55
Evil thoughts are erased, contemplating the Word of the Guru's Shabad. Meeting with the True Guru, the door of liberation is found. The self-willed manmukh does not understand the essence of reality, and is burnt to ashes. His evil-mindedness separates him from the Lord, and he suffers. Accepting the Hukam of the Lord's Command, he is blessed with all virtues and spiritual wisdom. O Nanak, he is honored in the Court of the Lord. 56
One who possesses the merchandise, the wealth of the True Name, crosses over, and carries others across with him as well. One who intuitively understands, and is attuned to the Lord, is honored. No one can estimate his worth. Wherever I look, I see the Lord permeating and pervading. O Nanak, through the Love of the True Lord, one crosses over. 57
"Where is the Shabad said to dwell? What will carry us across the terrifying world-ocean? The breath, when exhaled, extends out ten finger lengths; what is the support of the breath? Speaking and playing, how can one be stable and steady? How can the unseen be seen?" Listen, O master; Nanak prays truly. Instruct your own mind. The Gurmukh is lovingly attuned to the True Shabad. Bestowing His Glance of Grace, He unites us in His Union. He Himself is all-knowing and all-seeing. By perfect destiny, we merge in Him. 58
That Shabad dwells deep within the nucleus of all beings. God is invisible; wherever I look, there I see Him. The air is the dwelling place of the absolute Lord. He has no qualities; He has all qualities. When He bestows His Glance of Grace, the Shabad comes to abide within the heart, and doubt is eradicated from within. The body and mind become immaculate, through the Immaculate Word of His Bani. Let His Name be enshrined in your mind. The Shabad is the Guru, to carry you across the terrifying world-ocean. Know the One Lord alone, here and hereafter. He has no form or color, shadow or illusion; O Nanak, realize the Shabad. 59
O reclusive hermit, the True, Absolute Lord is the support of the exhaled breath, which extends out ten finger lengths. The Gurmukh speaks and churns the essence of reality, and realizes the unseen, infinite Lord. Eradicating the three qualities, he enshrines the Shabad within, and then, his mind is rid of egotism. Inside and out, he knows the One Lord alone; he is in love with the Name of the Lord. He understands the Sushmana, Ida and Pingala, when the unseen Lord reveals Himself. O Nanak, the True Lord is above these three energy channels. Through the Word, the Shabad of the True Guru, one merges with Him. 60
"The air is said to be the soul of the mind. But what does the air feed on? What is the way of the spiritual teacher, and the reclusive hermit? What is the occupation of the Siddha?" Without the Shabad, the essence does not come, O hermit, and the thirst of egotism does not depart. Imbued with the Shabad, one finds the ambrosial essence, and remains fulfilled with the True
Name. "What is that wisdom, by which one remains steady and stable? What food brings satisfaction?" O Nanak, when one looks upon pain and pleasure alike, through the True Guru, then he is not consumed by Death. 61
If one is not imbued with the Lord's Love, nor intoxicated with His subtle essence, without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he is frustrated, and consumed by his own inner fire. He does not preserve his semen and seed, and does not chant the Shabad. He does not control his breath; he does not worship and adore the True Lord. But one who speaks the Unspoken Speech, and remains balanced, O Nanak, attains the Lord, the Supreme Soul. 62
By Guru's Grace, one is attuned to the Lord's Love. Drinking in the Ambrosial Nectar, he is intoxicated with the Truth. Contemplating the Guru, the fire within is put out. Drinking in the Ambrosial Nectar, the soul settles in peace. Worshipping the True Lord in adoration, the Gurmukh crosses over the river of life. O Nanak, after deep contemplation, this is understood. 63
"Where does this mind-elephant live? Where does the breath reside? Where should the Shabad reside, so that the wanderings of the mind may cease?" When the Lord blesses one with His Glance of Grace, he leads him to the True Guru. Then, this mind dwells in its own home within. When the individual consumes his egotism, he becomes immaculate, and his wandering mind is restrained. "How can the root, the source of all be realized? How can the soul know itself? How can the sun enter into the house of the moon?" The Gurmukh eliminates egotism from within; then, O Nanak, the sun naturally enters into the home of the moon. 64
When the mind becomes steady and stable, it abides in the heart, and then the Gurmukh realizes the root, the source of all. The breath is seated in the home of the navel; the Gurmukh searches, and finds the essence of reality. This Shabad permeates the nucleus of the self, deep within, in its own home; the Light of this Shabad pervades the three worlds. Hunger for the True Lord shall consume your pain, and through the True Lord, you shall be satisfied. The Gurmukh knows the unstruck sound current of the Bani; how rare are those who understand. Says Nanak, one who speaks the Truth is dyed in the color of Truth, which will never fade away. 65
"When this heart and body did not exist, where did the mind reside? When there was no support of the navel lotus, then in which home did the breath reside? When there was no form or shape, then how could anyone lovingly focus on the Shabad? When there was no dungeon formed from egg and sperm, who could measure the Lord's value and extent? When color, dress and form could not be seen, how could the True Lord be known?" O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are detached. Then and now, they see the Truest of the True. 66
When the heart and the body did not exist, O hermit, then the mind resided in the absolute, detached Lord. When there was no support of the lotus of the navel, the breath remained in its own home, attuned to the Lord's Love. When there was no form or shape or social class, then the Shabad, in its essence, resided in the unmanifest Lord. When the world and the sky did not even exist, the Light of the Formless Lord filled the three worlds. Color, dress and form were contained in the One Lord; the Shabad was contained in the One, Wondrous Lord. Without the True Name, no one can become pure; O Nanak, this is the Unspoken Speech. 67
"How, in what way, was the world formed, O man? And what disaster will end it?" In egotism, the world was formed, O man; forgetting the Naam, it suffers and dies. One who becomes Gurmukh contemplates the essence of spiritual wisdom; through the Shabad, he burns away his egotism. His body and mind become immaculate, through the Immaculate Bani of the Word. He remains absorbed in Truth. Through the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he remains detached; he enshrines the True Name in his heart. O Nanak,
without the Name, Yoga is never attained; reflect upon this in your heart, and see. 68
The Gurmukh is one who reflects upon the True Word of the Shabad. The True Bani is revealed to the Gurmukh. The mind of the Gurmukh is drenched with the Lord's Love, but how rare are those who understand this. The Gurmukh dwells in the home of the self, deep within. The Gurmukh realizes the Way of Yoga. O Nanak, the Gurmukh knows the One Lord alone. 69 Without serving the True Guru, Yoga is not attained; without meeting the True Guru, no one is liberated. Without meeting the True Guru, the Naam cannot be found. Without meeting the True Guru, one suffers in terrible pain. Without meeting the True Guru, there is only the deep darkness of egotistical pride. O Nanak, without the True Guru, one dies, having lost the opportunity of this life. 70
The Gurmukh conquers his mind by subduing his ego. The Gurmukh enshrines Truth in his heart. The Gurmukh conquers the world; he knocks down the Messenger of Death, and kills it. The Gurmukh does not lose in the Court of the Lord. The Gurmukh is united in God's Union; he alone knows. O Nanak, the Gurmukh realizes the Word of the Shabad. 71
This is the essence of the Shabad - listen, you hermits and Yogis. Without the Name, there is no Yoga. Those who are attuned to the Name, remain intoxicated night and day; through the Name, they find peace. Through the Name, everything is revealed; through the Name, understanding is obtained. Without the Name, people wear all sorts of religious robes; the True Lord Himself has confused them. The Name is obtained only from the True Guru, O hermit, and then, the Way of Yoga is found. Reflect upon this in your mind, and see; O Nanak, without the Name, there is no liberation. 72
You alone know Your state and extent, Lord; What can anyone say about it? You Yourself are hidden, and You Yourself are revealed. You Yourself enjoy all pleasures. The seekers, the Siddhas, the many gurus and disciples wander around searching for You, according to Your Will. They beg for Your Name, and You bless them with this charity. I am a sacrifice to the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan. The eternal imperishable Lord God has staged this play; the Gurmukh understands it. O Nanak, He extends Himself throughout the ages; there is no other than Him. 73 1

Are u a carrot, egg or coffee bean?

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water. In the first, she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs and the last, ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil without saying a
word. In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in
a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl.

Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me what do you see?"
"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.
She brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. The daughter did and noted that they were soft.

She then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg.

Finally, she asked her to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled, as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked. "What's the point, mother?" Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced
the same adversity - boiling water - but each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard and unrelenting. However after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak.

The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior. But, after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened.

The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water they had changed the water.

"Which are you?" she asked her daughter. "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?"

Think of this: Which am I?

Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity, do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength? Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid
spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and a hardened heart? Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor.

If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hours are the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate to another level? How do
you handle Adversity? ARE YOU A CARROT, AN EGG, OR A COFFEE BEAN?

Don't tell GOD how big your storm is. Tell the storm how big your GOD is!

God: i am always here, there everywhere......you guys just don't see.

satnam: does it matter? as long as we love you right?

God: it does not matter. Until you start "seeing" the "soul" reason for your being, until you connect with the truth inside you, you will love me all you want yet never truly love me at all?

satnam: but love is all that matters?!?!

God: really? since when?

satnam: that's what most people say....you can do anything you want but if the heart is clean then love is all that matters...."truth" said it above, doesn't matter if one shaves, trims, cuts hair as long as there is love inside.

God: Hmm........did he say that?.....let's see.....let us put it into perspective.

satnam: go on

God: what is this thing you call love? do you believe that i made All of you perfect because of love? do you guys do things because of love? because you love me? because you love yourselves? if you guys did things because you loved me there would be no problems in this world, absolutely none, because you would be doing things I love.....for I am Love...that's why " jo toh perm khelan ka chao sir tar tali gali murh aaao"

satnam: so are you saying we do not love you?

God: If you loved me enough, did you never once question why I bestowed a perfect body for a perfect soul? Do you think I made a mistake when i made hair grow all over the body and grow longer on some parts of the body? There is always a reason for what i do. You had and will have no conscious choice on the kes (hair) on your body, I do it for you.

satnam: you mean there is a reason for this hair?

God : there is a reason for everything I do. Even what seems like chaos to humans is in perfect order. There is an order for everything, that is my hukam.

satnam: That's besides the point.....we were talking of love....

God: You may think it is besides the point but ultimately you cannot Love me unless you love everything, i repeat EVERYTHING about yourself. For I am you and you are me.......how can you love me when you show no love for yourself?
how can you love yourself when you desecrate parts of you that I cherish with love? You think you see a better person when you shave your beards or trim them, or pluck your eyebrows? I only see a person who is mocking Me, who is saying I made them imperfect. Thus they do these things not because they love themselves but because they see a fault in themselves.

satnam: wow! i never thought of it that way

God: There are greater truths than the truths you think you know. Love and God are one and the same thing.....but not the way the majority of you think of it. Love accepts Everything, love expects Nothing. If you don't love everything I give you how do you expect to get something? You yourselves deny yourselves and then blame it on me. Everyday you think you are not good looking or smart enough or attractive and go to great lengths to change that when All the time I see beauty in your souls. You guys do not want to think on a sole (soul) level.

satnam: clever ....

God: Because the soul sees beauty even when the mind denies it.

satnam: because the soul is that part of You which will never be destroyed.....hence it has to be.....perfect! beautiful!

God: yes, now you are getting it...like i told you last time "mun tu jot saroop hai apna mul pachaan"

satnam: wow, this is wicked, innit????

God: ha, that was funny....i even enjoyed the moment when Bhai Jasbir Singh Ji said that at the camp!!! Wicked!!

satnam: God you like humour don't you?

God: well, I invented humour didn't I?

satnam: so to love You we gotta love everything about You?

God: There is no contract to love me....you do not have to if you choose not to, but I tell you this, If you want to love Me start by loving yourself, completely without ego, wash the vessel of your body, keep it pure, do not intoxicate it, do not interfere with my Will, My right to give you hair.....then our game of love will start.....then you will begin to know not just love but the essence of True Love..

“Vaheguruu Gurmantar Hai…”

The word “Vaheguru” is made up of two word “Vaah(e)” and “Guru”. “Vaah” or “Vaahe” is an ecstatic expression of awe and wonder. Therefore it is often translated as “wondrous” or “wonderful”. “Guru” derives from two words. “Gu” means darkness, and “Ru” (‘Roo’) means light. Therefore ‘Guru’ means that power, being, and presence, which dispels darkness and brings light, in other words ‘Enlightener’. Cumulatively, the name implies wonder at the Divine Light eliminating spiritual darkness. It might also imply -‘Hail the Lord whose Name eliminates spiritual darkness.’ Thus the two constituents of Vaheguru (Vaahe+Guroo) implies the state of wondrous ecstasy and offering homage to the Divine Creator Being.

By chanting a Mantar we try to invoke the Pure Being who resides within. Thus, the Mantar is the Name of the Inner Being whom we are calling or want to Realise. Therefore, if chanted with concentration, intuitive understanding, determination, constancy, assiduousness and feeling, the Mantar will open a person to themselves — it will bring the person face to face with the Divine Light within.

The Mantars for Simran (remembrance of the Lord) are usually short, containing only a few syllables. Relatively longer Mantars are impractical for chanting and meditation, thus loose their effectiveness. The shorter Mantars of fewer syllables are more effective, because they are more likely to flow better with the natural rhythm of the breathing process or 'Praans', easy to remember and more suitable for concentration and remembrance.
